Building Workplace Respect and Resolving Conflict

<<First Name>>

We hope to see you tonight at 6:30pm ET for panelists who will share their knowledge and experience on how to build respect as technical communicators in the workplace and how to resolve the inevitable conflicts that occur.

RSVP now on our event page to join us!

Hurricane Ian Fundraiser for UCF Students

Hurricane Ian had a devastating effect on Florida, and many UCF students’ lives were seriously disrupted. Some students were displaced from their homes.

Our chapter has always celebrated our close ties to the UCF community, and we want to do our part to support the students now. In lieu of meeting fees for our October chapter meeting, we ask that you donate the amount you are comfortable with to UCF’s Emergency Relief Fund for Students. For our UCF students, this donation is a small way for us to honor all of you!

Donations will provide immediate relief for UCF students or employees who are housing and food insecure, or who need emergency funding to get through temporary difficulties. Every dollar will be matched up to $25,000 by Carrie Daanen ’92 Chair of the UCF Foundation Board of Directors.

Donate Now

If you would like to donate to this fund instead of paying the regular meeting fee, go ahead and donate any amount you choose. Once you’ve donated, email president@stcflorida.org and (if you feel comfortable doing so) let us know how much you contributed. Even if you don’t plan to attend the meeting, UCF, its students, and our chapter will greatly appreciate all donations!

If you would like to pay the regular meeting fee instead of donating now, go ahead and pay through PayPal following our standard process. (You can always donate to the emergency relief fund  later.) As always, meetings are free for students.

About the Meeting

We are thrilled to welcome the following panelists:

  • W.C. Wiese
  • Jessica Nealon
  • Rachael Swertfeger

As technical communicators, we know our work is valuable! The Technical Communication Body of Knowledge explains our value is twofold:

They make information more usable and accessible to those who need that information, and they advance the goals of the companies and organizations that employ them.

And yet, we often hear from our members in the chapter about their struggles to demonstrate their worth as technical communicators and deal with conflict with other associates and teams.  Our panelists will speak about their experiences in dealing with these challenges.

W.C. Wiese was inspired to propose this panel after reading the article “Articulating Value Amid Persistent Misconceptions About Technical and Professional Communication in the Workplace” by Emily January Petersen. The author proposed that technical communication was often considered expendable and misunderstood for a variety of reasons.

Please bring your questions for our panelists! They will give their best advice on how to address the challenges you are facing with building rapport with other teams. Since we want to allow opportunities for our attendees to ask questions, we will not be recording the discussion, to allow our panelists and attendees to speak freely.

Agenda

We are planning the following agenda for the event:

  • 6:30 pm – Networking
  • 7:00 pm – Welcome and announcements
  • 7:15 pm – Moderated Q&A with panelists and attendees
  • 8:30 pm – Closing
