O God of unchangeable power and eternal light: Look favorably on your whole Church that wonderful and sacred mystery; by the effectual working of your providence carry out in tranquillity the plan of salvation; let the whole world see and know that things which were cast down are being raised up and things which had grown old are being made new and that all things are being brought to their perfection by him through whom all things were made your Son Jesus Christ our Lord; who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit one God for ever and ever. Amen.

Recap of Sunday's Parish Wide Meeting

To a nearly full capacity in Stevenson Hall, Bishop Megan moderated our Town Hall meeting to address changes moving forward following Priest Doyle’s departure.

Canon Julie Wakelee standing, far left brings notes from parishioners to Bishop Megan.  On the opposite side seated is Rev. Canon Mary Goshert and Very Rev Ed Howell.  They have agreed to jointly serve as St. Patrick’s Interim Priests on a one third time basis. Fr. Ed’s role will be mainly Pastoral Care and Canon Mary will hold office hours two days per week.  Each will lead worship for two services per month.  On any 5th Sunday month Morning Prayer will be led by our laity.

Our hungry bodies were very well nourished by parishioner cooks and served, prepped and cleaned up by volunteers spearheaded by Eleanor Albon shown here monitoring the essential coffee maker.

The photo below shows the many parishioner questions posed on the board alongside Canon Julie.

Questions were also welcomed live from parishioners.  Bishop Megan encouraged everyone to continue to engage with the Vestry, Interim Priests, Father Ed and Canon Mary and each other.  Priorities in communication, finance-stewardship were clearly designated as our domain.

The Bishop introduced the term “virtuous circle” as a path of ongoing dialogue toward healing and mutual ministry in our becoming a beloved community. Talk, Listen. Act. Repeat.

Ecumenical Taizé at Congregational Church

Ecumenical Taizé in Sonoma Valley celebrates DIA DE MUERTOS on Friday, October 21 at Congregational Church at 252 West Spain Street from 4:00 to 5:00 PM. Those who attend are asked to bring pictures of their deceased loved ones to be placed on the altar during the service.

Ecumenical Taizé happens each month of the year here in the Valley on the third Friday, 4:00-5:00 PM at the Congregational Church.

Taizé prayer involves the repetition of simple Christian phrases.  The experience of singing these phrases nourishes us on a deep non-verbal level.  The service consists of quiet chanting, a psalm, a reading and silence.  Taizé prayer provides time for us to speak particular needs of our own and of the world; It gives us an opportunity to bring our burdens and the burdens of our world to the community committing to Christ Jesus all that is in our hearts.

Taizé, a village in France where the brothers of an ecumenical community reside.  Since the late ‘50’s, young adults and those of any age have been gathering by the thousands, literally, on the hillside of this little village, gathering to meet one another, to pray and discover how they can be messengers of hope and reconciliation in their own life situations.

The community was founded in 1940 by a young 25 year old Swiss Protestant theologian, Brother Roger Schutz who soon became an icon of reconciliation in the lives of individuals and among churches.
After the start of World War II, the small village of Taizé was close to the demarcation line that divided the portions of France controlled by German forces and by the French Vichy government. It was, the community said, strategically located for welcoming refugees, including Jews hiding from Nazis.

Warned that German forces were aware of their activities, Roger and his sister, Genevieve, let in autumn 1942, but returned in 1944.  In the interval, a few other religious brothers had joined the order in Taizé. Today, more than 100 brothers—Catholics and Protestants—from more than 25 nations are members of the community.

While the service itself is open to anyone, instrumentalists or singers interested in becoming part of an Ecumenical Taizé Ensemble are invited to come to a rehearsal on Friday, October 21 at 3:00 PM, an hour before the service. If you are coming with an instrument please call Jim by Tuesday, October 18 so he can prepare the appropriate sheet music for you.

For more information, please contact Jim McFadden at 707-815-2673 or
Kathleen Lukefahr Jewell at 707-225-4804.

Food bank Pop-Up Ministry!

This week on Tuesday our crew was back again!! Below take a look at Eleanor's thankful note to her awesome volunteers who helped her distribute food to those in need in our community.

Thank you to Erin G, Susan S, Ron K, Lynn K, Carolyn W, Kerin M, driver Ron and rep Arturo.  54 households/201 individuals received food tonight in St Pat's parking lot!  This is the highest count since last April 6!  With food costs rapidly escalating, I suspect the number of clients will increase.

There were two bags of food found in the room off the Narthex.  Thank you to that "mystery person(s)."  Both bags were all distributed today!  I wish you could have seen the smiles and hear the thanks of the recipients!

Except for what is in the senior boxes, clients can see what's being put in their vehicles.  They tell us which items they won't use, which is greatly appreciated.  Their desire to not waste says they want to in turn help others.

One funny incident - a carton of eggs was pretty well mangled, but the eggs were all OK.  It was so strange to need 2 hands to pass the carton to the driver, but no scrambled eggs were placed in the vehicle!

As of tonight, Pam T, Susan S, Ned B, Erin G, and Lynn K are scheduled for Tues, Nov 1.  Need one more.

For Tues, Nov 15, Anna/Joel, Carolyn W, Erin G and Kerin M are scheduled.  Need one more.  Please let me know ASAP if any of you need to cancel or if you're available to be the 6th person for either Nov 1 or Nov 15.

If you can, please check your calendars to see if you can volunteer Dec 6 and/or Dec 20.
Dec 20, let's plan to wear some festive attire for the season: shirts/sweaters/hats/blinking necklaces/whatever.  Maybe shop the Halloween candy sales on Nov 1 to give to the families with children for Christmas/Hanukah/Kwanza.

With so much bad happening, it's so good to be a small part of something good!

Eleanor

The group had a tour of the church and lovely grounds on the Napa River, participated in the mid day church service, and were invited to a buffet lunch. Folks really enjoyed the question and answer session with Abbess, Mother Melania after the luncheon reading.

Our guide was the delightful Mother Angelina who provided an excellent tour and answered everyone's questions with wit and wisdom. We ended our visit at the Monastery gift shop where Sister Marie assisted everyone with the their purchases and special orders.

Everyone agreed that it was a special day. As Diana E. Remarked, "The Monastery brought me a great measure of peace."

Amen to that!

Helping Our Friends
The Fonseca Family and The Buff Family

From left to right: Ana Lucía, Luciana, and Javier

Dear Friends,

Betsy and I want to share a note of background to the link below.

In 2010 I travelled on my first of four trips to Nicaragua with Santa Rosa Sunrise Rotary. Since then Betsy has served on three successive missions and our son Brett participated in 2018.  Our daughter Rebecca is a future candidate.

To say these service missions for vision and dental relief were life-changing would be an understatement. In 2010 I met Xavier, then a dentist and Public Health Doctor working for Colgate in Nicaragua.  In 2016 Betsy and I met Ana Lucia, now married to Xavier.  Ana Luci is also a dentist and Public Health Doctor.  They volunteered extensively with our missions and in 2017 their daughter Luciana was born.

In 2018 the political climate in Nicaragua became oppressive to opponents of the government like Xavier and Ana Lucia.  After deep discernment Xavier and Ana Lucia decided Luciana’s future was more secure elsewhere.  They travelled to visit us as tourists and commenced then courageous rebuilding of their lives when they realized the threat to them in Nicaragua.

On April 25 Xavier and his family were granted political asylum status.  Since then he and Ana Lucia have taken advanced courses toward their goal of licensure in the United States.  They relocated to Florida in 2021 and both are working in dental clinics while continuing to study and resume prepare for licensure as dentists.

Throughout their resettlement in Sonoma County and then in Florida, their focus, commitment to each other and Luciana has been an inspiration to Betsy and me and others who are observing this family adapt, adjust and persevere toward a life of service and stewardship of their God given talents.

I could go on, and Betsy and I are eager to share our experience and hopes for this remarkable couple. Their story is one of hope, faith and love.  Adversity kindled it.  Commitment has sustained it.  Your support can advance it.

On November 5, Xavier and Ana Lucia have interviews at St Vincent’s Medical Center in Cleveland. A four day pre “bench test” prep course, travel and exam is $7,000 each.  The program begins in July of 2023.  This residency program has a 12 candidate cohort.  My confidence in Xavier and Ana Lucia to succeed in the two-year program is firm.

Take this opportunity to contribute toward a fuller future and shining smiles for many.

Gratefully,
Richard and Betsy

White Socks!  White Socks!!

We heard that there was a need for new white socks for people who go to the FISH Food Pantry to pick up food. Socks for men and women can be donated from our parishioners as they enter the narthex of our church.  A barrel will be right inside the front door, in the left corner.  Donations will be delivered monthly by any one of our St. Patrick's members, who volunteer at FISH in Santa Rosa.

In the past, St. Patrick's donated socks for people in need, and then came Covid!  We are now back in business, and you have an opportunity to donate this coming Sunday!

It's a great day, when we can help someone put their best foot forward, in a new pair of socks!!
