HOK #129: Meet Thuy Do

In our ‘Humans of Kitchissippi’ column this month, we spoke with Thuy Do, who shared with us her story about overcoming a severe stroke at only 15.
Thuy is now back in school and recently competed as a cyclist at the national championships.

150 years of Mechanicsville: The neighbourhood forged through hard work

This year marks an incredible milestone in the history of Mechanicsville: 150 years! Yes, it was in 1872 that two Bytown entrepreneurial industrialists laid out a subdivision on the outskirts of town, though Mechanicsville was actually secondary to their main plans for the property. Dave Alston explains more in our 'Early Days' column this month. 

Good vibrations: YSPF helps young musicians in National Capital Region

The Young String Performers’ Foundation (YSPF) are gearing up for what they hope will be a successful season bringing music to live audiences once again. 

Concerts begin at 7:30 p.m., with the first one of the season being held at The First Unitarian Congregation Church (located at 30 Cleary Ave) on Oct. 29

Maker House to stop selling custom-cut furniture, closes woodshop branch

The woodshop branch of Maker House Co. is closing this fall.

Store owner Gareth Davies has been making custom-cut furniture for seven years. Customers who wanted any specific size, colour or style of any table, bench, bookcase or whatever other furniture were able to have their specifications met at the well-known Hintoburg business.

The Kitchissippi Times' Alvin Tsang spoke with Davis about the unfortunate closure.

Oct. 28: Westboro Legion Halloween Dance
Pam and Doug Champagne entertain from 7-11 p.m. in the upstairs lounge, 391 Richmond Rd. Legion and Ladies Auxiliary members $2. Public admission $5.

Oct. 29: Young String Performers' Foundation Concert
The Young String Performers' Foundation (YSPF) presents a classical concert by very talented children and youth under the age of 18. Our goal is to create, provide, promote and subsidize opportunities that will develop the abilities of promising young string players. This concert is sure to take your breath away! NOV. 4: Westboro Legion Live Band
The Rick King Band entertains from 7:00 p.m. to 11 p.m. in the Upstairs Bar and Lounge, located at 391 Richmond Rd. General admission: $5. Legion and Ladies Auxiliary members: $2.

NOV. 11: Remembrance Day Services in Westboro
The Westboro Legion’s first service and wreath-laying ceremony will be held at 11 a.m. at the Carlingwood Shopping Centre. At 1:45 p.m. a parade that includes the Ottawa Fire services Band marches from the branch to the Westboro Cenotaph for the 2:00 p.m. ceremony.

November 12: Fall Fair – First Unitarian Congregation of Ottawa
Don't miss Ottawa's largest church bazaar! Do your seasonal and pre-Christmas shopping at the First Unitarian Congregation's Fall Fair, featuring clothing, jewelry, gift items, a silent auction, linens, music, books, toys & puzzles, takeout food and more. Runs from 9:30 am to 2:30 pm. Masks required. Location: 30 Cleary Avenue, off Richmond Road, 1 km east of Woodroffe Avenue.

Nov. 25-27 OHS Auxiliary Christmas Craft Sale
The OHS Auxiliary will be selling high quality handmade crafts at its Christmas Craft Sale at "The Spot" in Carlingwood Mall, 2121 Carling Avenue, K2A 1H2. This store is located between Bentley and Laura Secord. Friday November 25, 10 am - 9 pm, Saturday November 26, 9:30 am - 6 pm, Sunday November 27, 11 am - 5 pm. All proceeds go to support the animals at the Ottawa Humane Society. We accept cash, credit (over $10) or debit. Sorry no table rentals. Free parking. Bytown Voices Choir has opened its doors again to singers from near and far. We are masked and singing at 7:30 pm Tuesday nights at St Basil's Church on Maitland, just north of the Queensway. And now we are truly a community choir as we welcome youths from 9 years and up to join our mixed voice chorus. There is no auditioning, everyone is welcome. THURSDAYS – WEEKLY DARTS
Regulars and new players are invited to join the Westboro Legion’s Dart League. The Downstairs Hall door and bar open at 6:30 p.m. and play begins at 7:30 p.m. The cost is $6.

Ottawa Election 2022: Kitchissippi’s candidates for councillor

Kitchissippi residents are just days away from voting in the upcoming municipal election. With at least 10 new councillors and a new mayor coming to the council table, the Oct. 24 election will be one to watch. 

In Kitchissippi, also known as Ward 15, there are three names on the ballot for councillor: Oonagh Fitzgerald, Jeff Leiper and Dan Stringer.
