One of the most important skills for responsibly armed citizens to develop is a strong sense of intuition or environmental intelligence. Learning to pay attention to the gut feeling that something isn't quite right is critical for being proactive vs reactive in an in-extremis situation.
Our end goal is to develop the ability to perceive critical physical and non-physical things around us. Our mind needs to use information gathered by our senses of the world around us and then rapidly build a full picture that makes us aware of what happened, what is happening, and what might yet happen.
One the physical side these are key terrain features such as cover, concealment, exits, windows, and a sense of the weather. The mind is additionally responsible for combining this information to better develop the physical picture to include things such as traction on a given surface for the weather conditions and the shoes being worn or the way that shadows or sunlight might be used to mask a threat.
On the non-physical side, we use our intuition to develop the ability to understand human interactions amongst the other people in the space we are in. We need to be able to determine if the vibe is friendly, hostile, chaotic, violent, or changing amongst different things. Is is important to be able to get a sense of if the energy in the place is stable, unpredictable, or changing. If we have a baseline for a given place/space, are we able to determine what doesn't feel right?
Being able to feel tension in a place is a decisive skill in our favor that helps to build a reactionary gap we can use to employ our skills. This includes things such as managing unknown contacts, building an exit strategy, or simply deciding to leave without stepping through a door. It's what keeps us from getting sucker punched and starting out fighting our way through an ambush.
Building environmental intelligence is a skill that takes time and practice to develop. It involves intentionally being aware of everything and everyone around you without projecting a glare that escalates tension in a space. It involves being present in what you are currently doing/who you are with and also present in the larger space around you.
