Each week, Charley Walters shares some interesting information surrounding either one of the films coming up at The Dreamland or Dreamland Drive-In, or provides some top notch recommendations on how to beef up your movie pedigree at home. (These films will be available via cable providers, streaming services, and often times, your local library).
FILM FOR THOUGHT
Six years ago this month, Josh Gray (Dreamland’s Director of Creative Programming) and Joe Hale (at the time Dreamland’s Executive Director) decided to diversify the theater’s film programming by instituting the series Film for Thought. Every Wednesday night FFT would show single screenings of non-mainstream features and be free to Dreamland members. Most titles would be new, but the mix would sometimes include classics such as Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho and Francois Truffaut’s Fahrenheit 451.
Six years and almost 300 films later, the series continues. Here are some statistics about the 38 films shown thus far in 2022.
- 21 narrative films, including 13 dramas, 2 comedies, and 6 “dramedies,” featuring established and future stars such as Naomi Watts, Javier Bardem, Jessie Buckley, Lea Seydoux, Wes Studi, Michelle Yeoh, and Olivia Colman.
- 16 documentaries, including 4 music docs (perennial favorites at FFT) about Jimi Hendrix, Leonard Cohen, Buddy Guy, and New Orleans Jazz Fest.
- 1 anthology of animated films.
- 2 classic titles: Help! and The Harder They Come.
- 14 titles from the USA, 6 from the UK, 3 from France, and 1 each from Albania, Canada, Croatia, Iran, Israel, Jamaica, Japan, Norway, Spain, and Ukraine, and one joint effort from the USA and Canada; 4 titles were Oscar-nominated anthologies of work from multiple countries.
- 7 titles from female directors, 3 from male/female teams, and 1 from a non-binary director.
If you haven’t yet been to Film for Thought, we encourage you to set aside a Wednesday night.
