Happy October to our ABE Massachusetts Community Members!
 
The ABE MA Team would also like to take this time to acknowledge that the land we are on is the original homelands of the Mashpee Wampanoag, Aquinnah Wampanoag, Nipmuc, and Massachusett tribal nations. We acknowledge the painful history of genocide and forced removal from this territory, and we honor and respect the many diverse Indigenous peoples still connected to this land on which we live. This month's newsletter is a tad bit late (thanks, PDI workshop prep) but nonetheless, we have so much to share! Our first Fall ABE PD workshop in 3 years was a hit, book club planning with ABE SF is underway, and many upcoming opportunities and events!
Our Fall PD Workshop Wrap-Up: Rainbows, Sunsets, and a Nobel Prize

36 PCR reactions, 17 teachers, 6 bins, 5 labs, 4 ABE sites, 3 sunsets, 2 countries, 1 experience. A huge thank you to our returning teachers, new teachers, and new ABE site staff for participating in our Fall PDI workshop over the weekend. Our Book Club is A-Peeling 🍌

We're happy to announce that author, Dan Koeppel will be speaking at our first book club session on November 3rd. Sign-up for our fall Bi-Coastal Book Club is closed, however, if you are still interested, please email Alia as soon as possible. 
Congratulations to ABE MA Teacher, Dr. Laurie Jackson-Grusby (Brockton) for Winning a Mini MTF Grant from the ABE PO 🎉
Dr. Laurie Jackson-Grusby was awarded for her development of Experimental Analysis of Environmental Antibiotic Resistance, a pair of laboratories that will engage students in critical thinking about antimicrobial resistance, uses and misuses of antibiotics, and the natural product origins of antibiotics.

What We're Reading: Nature's Racism in Science Special Issue

Science is “a shared experience, subject both to the best of what creativity and imagination have to offer and to humankind’s worst excesses”. So wrote the guest editors of this special issue of Nature, Melissa Nobles, Chad Womack, Ambroise Wonkam and Elizabeth Wathuti, in a June editorial announcing their involvement.

HMNH's Virtual Scientist in the Classroom

Recommended for grades 6–9

Would you like your students to meet a practicing scientist? Invite a Harvard Science Education Partner into your classroom. What does it mean to be a scientist? What are scientists studying today? How do you become a scientist? How can science help us understand the world? Harvard Science Education Partners can answer these questions and more.

Science Education Partners are Harvard graduate students and postdoctoral fellows who study a variety of STEM topics including biology, paleontology, botany, Earth science, and genetics. Invite a Science Education Partner into your class to discuss their research and their passion for science. Each Science Education Partner will share a short video in advance about their work and respond to student questions via video conference.

This program is free to all groups of ten or more at schools nationwide through May 31, 2023.

Jessica Silverman Cofounds Phenomena

Hey there ABE teachers! I’m Jessica Silverman, a former ABE teacher, LabXchange ABE content designer, and now cofounder of Phenomena - a new destination for experiential STEM learning. 

My cofounders and I are building Phenomena to make STEM engaging and accessible for ALL students. We create bite-sized interactives that build intuition through play and exploration. 

Together with teachers and students, we’ve created 100+ experiences like this one on finding the best fit line for data with our easy to use creator tool. All of our experiences are free for teachers and students.

We’re just getting started, and I’m really excited to hear from the ABE community
as we expand our life science experiences!
