Welcome to REIA-your gateway to the global rare earth industry

Dear REIA members and stakeholders,
Submit your abstract before October 24!
You as a practitioner or researcher are invited to share your case on critical raw materials and to contribute to the conference program with a 15-min presentation or for a poster!
REIA is a partner of IRTC Conference 2023. Join us at the conference and engage with international leading experts, practitioners and participants concerned with raw materials and raw materials risks for, among others, the renewable & digital transition!
Australian National University (ANU) is hosting a Rare Earth Conference on 1-2 November in Canberra. The goals are to build and galvanize the Australian Rare Earth community, establish and disseminate the current state of knowledge on rare earth ore systems, and to define the path forward. Most REIA members from Australia will be presenting during the conference.
In this week’s lead article George Barakos and co-authors discusses the status of the Australian REE industry and uses SWOT and risk analyses to identify and evaluate the challenges and opportunities with respect to building an integrated rare earth supply chain.
Other stories include updates from REIA members WoodMac, Pensana Plc, Peak Rare Earths and Ucore Rare Metals, e-mobility and geo-political news.
Please feel free to contact us if you have any further queries.

REIA Partner Event: Raw Materials for a Sustainable Future: 15-17 February 2023  Lille, France

The global network “International Round Table on Materials Criticality” (IRTC), funded by EIT RawMaterials, has a crucial role in the international debate on criticality. In IRTC, leading experts and developers of criticality methodologies discuss different perspectives and requirements of robust criticality assessments, bridging academic expertise and industry practice. IRTC23 contributes to creating a shared understanding on raw materials and criticality by bringing together experts, practitioners, and researchers for #dialogues on Critical Raw Materials for a sustainable future (Read more)

The Australian Rare Earth Conference 1-2 November 2022 | Canberra, Australia

Australia is a global mineral supplier powerhouse, and is positioned to be a major producer of rare earth elements needed to drive the green energy transition across the 21st Century and beyond. The Australian Rare Earth Conference is the first conference to bring together industry, government and academia to discuss the state of the Australian Rare Earth industry. The conference will focus on geology and mineralogy of Australian ore systems, but will also include sessions on processing technologies and market dynamics (Read more)

The long uphill journey of Australia’s rare earth element industry: challenges and opportunities

In recent years, several mining companies worldwide have made efforts towards establishing sustainable value-adding rare earth element (REE) supply chains to compete with China. Lynas and Iluka are two Australian mining companies that recently announced their plans to construct REE refinery plants to process and separate REE oxides in Western Australia and Texas, US (Read more)

REIA Member Peak and Shenghe Resources Sign Offtake and Strategic Co-operation MOU

Peak and Shenghe have signed a non-binding MOU covering concentrate offtake and strategic co-operation in support of the development of the Ngualla Project Follows Peak’s decision to initially develop the Ngualla Project on a standalone basis and produce a high-grade bastnaesite rare earth concentrate Shenghe holds a 19.9% interest in Peak and has agreed to standstill arrangements (Read more)

REIA Member Wood Makenzie: What would an accelerated energy transition mean for metals and mining

The metals and mining sector is a critical enabler of the energy transition. From the lithium in EV batteries to the rare earths in wind turbine generators, mined commodities are integral building blocks of low-carbon technologies. But with soaring demand comes the risk of supply bottlenecks that could limit the pace of change (Read more)

With demand for electric vehicles growing, Cyclic Materials seeks to recycle the rare earth elements needed to power them

A new company is emerging in Kingston’s burgeoning green-tech economy, intent on providing the rare earth elements essential to transitioning from fossil fuels to greener energy by recycling rather than mining them. “I started this company after years of thinking about the creation of a constant supply of rare earth elements and it appears that one way to do this is to recycle end-of-life products,” says Ahmad Ghahreman, CEO, president and founder of Cyclic Materials (Read more)

Pensana positions Saltend to reap supply chain diversification rewards

Magnet metal and rare earths miner Pensana reports that the electric vehicle (EV) transition is forecast to become the largest energy transition in history and will require a significant proportion of battery and magnet metals as a result. With its Longonjo rare earths mine, in Angola, and its Saltend rare earths production facility, in the UK, Pensana says it plans to produce about 5% of the projected world demand for magnet metals (Read more)

The US State of Louisiana Offers C$15M+ Incentive Package for Ucore's First RapidSX Rare Earth Processing Facility

Ucore's Board of Directors has unanimously agreed to commit the Company toward establishing its first Strategic Metals Complex (SMC) in Louisiana. Rare earth oxide products from the Louisiana SMC will be critical to North America's and Louisiana's goal to expand toward green energy technologies. The proposed incentive package from Louisiana includes US$9.6M in tax incentives and payroll rebates over the first ten years of operation (Read more)

Europe’s electric car sales stagnating as China gains foothold

Chinese automakers are already responsible for five per cent of all battery-electric cars sold in the European market this year and could reach a nine to 18 per cent share of the electric car market in Europe by 2025, according to a new study by Transport & Environment (T&E). The think tank warns that the European auto industry will lose more and more market share to foreign manufacturers if it does not complete the transformation to e-mobility quickly enough (Read more)

All-Electric Car Registrations Exceeded 458,000 through August 2022 in USA

A total of 458,786 new battery-electric cars were registered in the US during the first eight months of 2022, which is about 56% more than a year ago. BEVs accounted for about 5% of the total number of registrations during the period, compared to 2.6% a year ago (Read more)

Germany: New registrations of passenger cars in the course of 2022 by brand and alternative drives

At the end of the third quarter, new registrations of passenger cars with alternative drives (electric (BEV), hybrid, plug-in , fuel cell, gas, hydrogen) were +11.3 percent above the result of the same period last year. 45.3 percent of all new passenger cars registered in 2022 were equipped with alternative drives. 26.2 percent and thus +10.5 percent more were new cars with an electric drive (electric ( BEV ), plug-in , fuel cell) and the proportion of electric vehicles ( BEV) grew by +24.8 percent to a share of 14.6 percent (Read more)

Talking Sense on Rare Earths

Despite the known scientific facts confirming that rare earths are safe when properly handled, the detractors are again spouting off their inaccurate pronouncements after the Perak state government said it would go ahead with the mining of lanthanide in Gerik. Their action may deny states with viable deposits of rare earths the opportunity to inject new vigour into their economy (Read more)

China Won’t Rush Its Clean Energy Transformation, Xi Says

President Xi Jinping has promised a slow and steady end to the growth of planet-warming emissions in China, with energy security taking top priority as the country contends with a flagging economy and tumult on global fuel markets. In a two-hour speech to kick off the weeklong Communist Party Congress, Xi said that prudence would govern China’s efforts to peak and eventually zero out carbon emissions (Read more)
