"My profession is “orthopedagoog” (behavioural consultant) and I've specialized in care for people with intellectual disabilities and challenging behaviour. Since 2019 I’m engaged as a PhD student in the project “Freedom and safety”. "I work as a senior researcher, on the topic of end-of-life care. I was always attracted to applied research, and so the shift towards more implementation-oriented research felt very logical. Besides working on several research projects I’m also coordinator of the Expertise Center for Palliative Care Amsterdam UMC, and in that capacity involved in the Consortium Palliative Care North-Holland and Flevoland. Aim of the Consortium is to improve palliative care through lasting connections between healthcare practice, research and education. I’m very happy to join AmsCIS and look forward to learn a lot from my AmsCIS colleagues and share some of my experiences too."

This time we have selected the recent published article of Schroeder et al (2022) published in Imp Sci Comm: Understanding implementation context and social processes through integrating Normalization Process Theory (NPT) and the Consolidated Framework for Implementation Research (CFIR)
We'll discuss the article using three questions:
- Why is this a relevant article?
- Where does this article fit within the broad spectrum of implementation science?
- In what way can you use this article in your own research?
The Journal Club is an initiative of AmsCIS and will be organised several times a year. Tips for interesting articles are most welcome!

YES WE CAN! - SESSION JANUARY 2023

In this session, researchers are given a platform to discuss and solve each other's implementation problems and challenges, and get inspired by each other's ideas and solutions.
During the session, one or two pre-selected challenges will be analysed with the attending implementation experts and peers. We already selected one interesting challenge, but we do have one spot left! Do you have an implementation problem or challenge that you want to discuss with fellow implementation peers and experts? UPCOMING PHD DEFENCES IN IMPLEMENTATION SCIENCE

Mireille Dekker will defend her dissertation on infection control link nurses in acute care hospitals; straregies to improve implementation and effectiveness on Friday November 11, 2022 (09:45), at the VU Aula.
Infection prevention measures, such as the application of hand hygiene, are crucial in the prevention of healthcare-associated infections. Yet in practice, compliance with these measures is still generally low.
Specially trained infection control link nurses raise awareness of infection prevention in their hospital departments and motivate colleagues to apply infection prevention measures. They are supported in their activities by infection prevention experts with locally designed programs. Due to this local nature, knowledge on how best to design, implement and maintain such programs is not sufficiently used and barriers and facilitators are not always recognized.
In this thesis this knowledge is synthesized. It shows that elements that facilitate the support of these nurses include a clear role profile, training in implementation skills, involvement from the entire infection prevention team, support from hospital and department management, and contact with other link nurses. At the departmental level, action plans help to structure activities. Involving stakeholders and going through a full quality cycle are important prerequisites for successful implementation of these programs.

Christiaan Vis will defend his dissertation on Implementing eMental health services in routine mental healthcare; From barriers to strategies on Thursday November 3, 2022 (11:15), in the VU Aula.
The thesis covers various research topics on decision making, barriers to implementation, organisational implementation climate, measuring implementation outcomes, and the effectiveness of a method for developing tailored implementation strategies for implementing eMental health services.
Christiaan's defence is preceded by a symposium on Implementing complex digital mental health interventions in routine care. Barriers, Strategies and the issue of Complexity. Three interesting and distinguished speakers preceding the defence ceremony: Prof.dr. David Mohr, Prof.dr. Tracy Finch and Dr. Byron Powell.

What should we focus on in the field of Implementation Science?
September 27th, Anouk Driessen and Femke van Nassau presented the findings of the implementation knowledge agenda. Highlights: We need to gain insights in how to link determinants to strategies, more emphasis on scaling up, sustainability and de-implementation processes, tackle the lack of capacity of implementation practitioners and researchers, and moreover need for more generalizable research.
