"A lifetime may not be long enough to attune ourselves fully to the harmony of the universe. But just to become aware that we can resonate with it -- that alone can be like waking up from a dream."
~ David Steindl-Rast

Enriching the Silence: A Worship Sharing Event

Sunday, October 3oth, 12:15 pm

Ministry & Worship invites Friends to participate in an exploration of our core spiritual practice. This is an opportunity to examine and share our practices, desires, experiences, challenges and breakthroughs (however we define these things), as we navigate the silence and consider messages.  Our intention is to examine what we do now, and consider possibilities that might help make MfW more meaningful in exactly the ways we hope for and aspire to. Please join us. Contact Judith Goedeke via Breeze for information.

In and Around Adelphi Meeting

Climate Action Working Group

Join us as we educate ourselves, and as we consider substantive, solution-based actions we can take personally, and as a community.  We welcome new members. If you are interested, please contact Ruby Steigerwald or Carole Hoage. Meanwhile, please read AFM's Sustainability Minute from 2007 here. And for extra credit, we invite you to view this QuakerSpeak video to see why the younger generation is taking up the challenge to directly lobby our representatives. “Quakers Talk to Congress About Climate Change” can be found here.

Interested in Joining an AFM Men’s or Women’s Group?

Adelphi’s men’s and women’s groups provide rich opportunities to build community and share stories of our life journeys. The men's group meets monthly and welcomes new members.  If you are interested, contact John Stith via Breeze.  He looks forward to speaking with you.  Equally welcome are women who may be interested in joining a women’s group. Contact Ann Marie Moriarty via Breeze.  She will be happy to provide details.

Considering Friends Community School for Your Child?

Now in its fourth decade, Friends Community School (FCS) is a K-8 Quaker progressive school that thoughtfully guides young children through adolescence, instilling compassion, curiosity, and confidence. FCS offers a diverse and inclusive community, a commitment to educating the whole child, and a curriculum that emphasizes inquiry-based and hands-on learning.

If you are interested in considering FCS for your child, join FCS students, parents, teachers, and administrators for upcoming admissions events from October 18 to January 12 to learn more about the school’s academic program, Quaker values, “green” campus, and the application process.  There are also several opportunities for on-campus open houses and virtual "coffees" to learn more.  The dates and times are all listed here.

Mutual Aid: A Friendly Approach
An Interactive BYM Workshop with Rashid Darden

Saturday, October 29th at 10 am, on Zoom

What’s the difference between charity and true mutual aid? Find out! Friends will also learn skills necessary to begin their own mutual aid ministries in their local meetings. This workshop will be recorded. Contact Marcy Seitel via Breeze with questions. Register here.

Black and gay for over 40 years, Mr. Darden is a member of Friends Meeting of Washington where he has served on the Peace & Social Concerns Committee. In BYM, he served on the Growing Diverse Leadership Committee. From 2021 to 2022, he convened the Transatlantic Friends Worship Group, which, for 52 consecutive weeks, centered the spirit-led leadership of people of color as an essential element of the Quaker testimony of justice. He has been Clerk of the Fellowship of Friends of African Descent since 2021 and works as Communications Manager for Friends General Conference.

"Once you become aware of this force of unity in life you can't ever forget it. It becomes part of everything you do. My goal in meditating this through music... is to uplift people as much as I can."

Land Reparations: A Journey of the Heart

A Pendle Hill Webinar

November 2nd, 7:30 pm, on Zoom

The land on which we live, work, and worship is land to which its original inhabitants belonged and from whom it was stolen. Acknowledging this systemic land theft is only a first step in healing the injuries a pervasive settler/colonist culture inflicted on Indigenous Peoples. We now have an opportunity to shift our consciousness from "we-them" to "we-us."  Here is the link for more information. There is a small fee.
