Dear Parents/Carers

I would like to take this opportunity, at the end of term, to thank you and also publicly thank my staff. Between us, we have made sure that your children, our students, have had the best support possible at home and in school to do their best, know what their best looks and feels like, and then use this to do even better.

Enjoy half-term with your children.

Russell Stevens

Headteacher

We have our second PSHE day just after the half term break on Wednesday 2nd November.  As always, if you have any queries about any of the topics, please do contact your child’s Head of Year.

Year 7: a tutor session on road safety followed by a carousel of sessions looking at: Vaping & smoking, Fire Safety, Debating skills, Successful starts: a careers workshop and Who am I?

Year 8: a tutor session on Food banks followed by a carousel of sessions covering: Cyber safety, Being me, Understanding drugs, Health and Safety and Alcoholism.

Year 9: will look at Employability skills, Gender equality, Career Pilot and discover their options. They will also watched a powerful Channel 4 documentary called I, Daniel Blake which covers topical issues around mental health, finance and debt.  Please note: this film is 15-rated, and at times hard hitting.  Our staff deliver the session in 3 parts discussing what the students see in each section.  Please do let us know if you do not consent to your child watching it.

Year 10: have a tutor session on Discrimination in the workplace followed by a carousel of sessions on: Career Choices, Finance, Body Image, Mental Health, Emotion Coaching and an interactive session with Queen Mary’s College.

Year 11: start with a tutor session on Employment Contracts and then have a carousel of sessions on LGBT+, Digital Footprints, Upskirting & Revenge Porn, Learning to Learn, and  getting prepared for next year.  They also have a Health and Fitness session with local PT Ryan King – all year 11 students should wear their full PE kit for the day.
Message for Year 7 students

Well done to Year 7 on completing their first half term at John Hanson. It has been a busy term with trips to Fairthorne Manor, Sport events, PSHE Day, LRC induction as well as starting at Secondary school.

I hope Year 7 have a restful half term. - Mrs Innes

Cultural Traditions:  Diwali - Festival of Lights  24 October 2022

We at John Hanson believe that family traditions are valuable and need to be encouraged within our students lives.

Being such a multicultural school, means that living with diversity is part of our students  school routine. Living with cultural diversity is a fundamental element for the healthy development of children, as it develops the way they relate to others, challenges them to think and value these differences, feeling, ways of  living etc.

It is vital to share this amongst our students  and as a result it will help  them collaboratively to look at themselves and reflect  more carefully and assume a respectful attitude towards others. Valuing plurality is essential to prevent children from developing prejudices.  As the planet has many varied people with their customs and traditions, we can say that we routinely are living with cultural diversity.

Therefore, our school has a very important role in promoting and valuing diversity. Students  have the opportunity to learn about the history, customs and religious festivals  of the different countries.

This week we are raising  awareness of an important religious event – Diwali - The festival of light, considered to be the most celebrated event in all India. Diya name of the lamp, is one of the most significant object as it represents joy, peace, hope and  light over darkness.

Diya is made out of nature, it symbolises a new year ahead, new achievements.
The candle leads the way to a better future, a row of lights symbolises the victory over darkness.

Happy Diwali, may Peace and Light fill your hearts!       Mrs Ferreira - E.A.L Co-ordinator

Bubble Box
Health or Hygiene/ Bread or Bubbles

Some families are struggling at present to put food on the table and it becomes a choice between bread or bubbles.  This is where we at school can offer a small helping hand to those families who are in need.  However, we did not do this alone as parents have very generously donated items in the past to get us started which was an enormous help for us.

This week I collected a box of products and would like to give a huge shout out to Emily and her team at Boots and Andover Hygiene Bank for generously donating the items below.  The best part is when we run out, Boots have kindly offered to help top-up the items we need for our Bubble Box.
The Bubble Box is just not for students who are on free school meals but also for those families who are struggling financially and who cannot access any Government funding.  Please feel free to send your child to Mrs Hartley in Medical at break, lunch-time or after school to collect the items you need.

I would also like to thank the parents who continue to generously donate and without all your help we could not run this scheme.
