Worldwide, around 80 percent of monorails fulfill a transport task in public transit, and thanks to their economic advantages and shorter implementation times, the trend is rising.

Faced with an escalating demand for public transportation in metropolitan areas, transportation authorities are challenged to select a technology that will satisfy the often-conflicting demands of high capacity and reliable service, urban fit, minimized environmental impact and budget restrictions. In order to further promote the use of monorails, there is a particular need for a tool which enables the evaluation of monorails in comparison to other transport systems in the course of higher-level transport planning or concrete tenders.

With the “Performance Specification for a Turnkey Mass Transit Monorail System”, the International Monorail Association has developed just such a performance catalogue for components, subsystems, vehicles and the infrastructure. It describes the performance of an entire monorail system in a way which enables users to understand what is possible and what can be requested. It also gives the vehicle and infrastructure supply industry a better insight into technology requirements and avoids system-specific isolated solutions. This performance-oriented standardization will ensure more competition along the supply chain and further strengthen the economic efficiency of the overall system.

This document is now the first official edition of the service catalogue. Around 25 international experts of various disciplines – for example, from vehicle technology, control and safety technology, infrastructure, civil and structural engineering, or very specific subsystems and components , were reviewing the latest document. Work began on the initial foundations for performance-based standardization back in 2014. Then, in 2019, a comprehensive review process started with the participation of additional experts and operators and concluded with commentary at the IMA‘s Monorailex 2021 industry meeting in Milan, Italy.



This standard was developed by a consensus standards development process with long-experienced experts from all over the globe coming from member organizations, non-members, and other stakeholders in the field.

Monorailex is the annual conference of the International Monorail Association with its goal to provide a platform to present new research and development of Monorail Systems and operational findings. Every second year the Monorailex will be linked with the InnoTrans, world's largest trade fair focused on the rail transport industry in Berlin, Germany.

One Track to the FUTURE – Monorail, the efficient solution for public mass transportation
 
Following, you will find a collection of ongoing monorail projects around the world with all facts and main general details described. It shows how advanced the technology of monorail systems has developed over the last years and how it is integrated and used in different metropolis with diverse public transport systems.

Cairo East and West of Nile Monorails
The metropolitan area of Cairo is adding two new monorail systems, 100 km long (66 mi), to the transit systems in the city. The two lines currently under construction are the West of Nile Line with 44 km (27.3 mi) and 13 stations from Giza to 6th of October City and East of Nile Line with 55 km (34 mi) and 22 stations from Cairo to the New Capital City. The two alignments were awarded in 2019 after many years of effort to a team consisting of Alstom Transportation Group, Orascom Construction and The Arab Contractors Co. Expected revenue service is 2023 for the East of Cairo Line, and 2024 for the West of Cairo Line. The Owner of the lines is the Egyptian National Authority for Tunnels (NAT).

Bangkok Pink and Yellow Line Monorail Project
The Bangkok monorails consist of two lines with a total length of 64.5km (40 mi) through highly congested urban environments. The Yellow Line runs east of Bangkok in a north-south direction, and it is 30.4 km (18.9 mi) long, with 23 stations and one depot. The Pink Line runs north of Bangkok, in an east-west direction and it is 34.5 km (21.4 mi) long, with 30 stations and one depot. Both projects have started commissioning work. The system provider is Alstom Transportation Group, and the contractor is Sino-Thai Engineering & Construction Public Company Limited (STECON). The operator of the lines is Bangkok Mass Transit System (BTS), the operator of the elevated rapid transit system in Bangkok, under a concession granted by the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration who owns the lines.

Salvador Line 3 Monorail, Bahia, Brazil
Once fully complete in 2025, SkyRail Bahia will be a two-line monorail network, the Orange and Green Lines. The 19.2 km (11.9 mi) Orange Line will connect Bairro do Comércio to Ilha de São João with 21 stations and is expected to carry 172,000 daily passengers. The Green Line will be 4.1 km (2.5 mi) with four stations, connecting São Joaquim to the Salvador Metro's Accesso Norte station. The new line is innovative because it would connect portions of the city that have long been separated by an existing train line and give disadvantaged communities access to Salvador's public transit system. The Skyrail Bahia consortium led by Chinese conglomerate BYD and Metrogreen, the project will be owned by the Government of the State of Bahia.

Wuhu Monorail
The Wuhu Rail Transit consists of a two-line monorail rapid transit system in Wuhu, Anhui, China; the first two lines of a five-line Asystem envisioned for the metropolitan area. Line 1 has a length of 30.3 km (18.8 mi) served by 24 stations, Line 2 will provide a 16.6 km (10.3 mi) rail connection served by 12 stations with three transfer stations. Both lines use Alstom INNOVIA Monorail 300 trains manufactured under a joint venture with CRRC. Both lines opened and they are in the commissioning phase. The system is owned by the City of Wuhu, and the Alstom-CRRC Joint Venture was awarded the 27-year operation and maintenance.
 
Expresso Tiradentes Monorail - São Paulo Monorail Line 15 (Silver) São Paulo Monorail Line 15 (Silver)
The completed portion of the São Paulo Metro Monorail Line 15 (Silver Line) is 14.6 km (8 mi) and includes 11 stations.  The final project between Vila Prudente and Hospital Cidade Tiradentes will be 24 km (15 mi) long with 17 stations, two maintenance facilities, and numerous switches for the operation of the train. The project extends subway line 2-green line to the eastern outskirts of São Paulo. There are two phases, the first one to São Mateus, a transportation hub east of São Paulo, and the second one to Tiradentes. The first 13 km of the guideway are completed and operational. The Joint Venture that produced the project was composed by Bombardier Transportation, Queiroz Galvão, and OAS, two large civil Brazilian conglomerates. The owner of the project is Metrô São Paulo.
 
I-405 Sepulveda Transit Corridor
The Los Angeles Metropolitan Transportation Authority (Metro) coordinated with Caltrans to evaluate alternative modes of transportation due to the challenging and complex I-405 Freeway through the Sepulveda Pass. LA Metro intends to construct a new high-speed, high-capacity Sepulveda Transit Corridor Project, which will connect the Westside to the San Fernando Valley.  This system will utilize monorail technology on elevated guideways and possibly underground tunnels. The project consists of the LA Metro funding two options to a 30% design level, one being a monorail, group led by BYD-Skanska-HDR, and the other by Bechtel Infrastructure Group. System Supplier: BYD.
 
Santiago de los Caballeros Monorail
The Monorail of Santiago de los Caballeros will be the first in the Caribbean to establish as a structuring axis for the metropolitan area of the city. The project consists of a 15 km (9.3 mi) 14-station monorail being built by FITRAM (Fund for the Development of Mass Transit in the Dominican Republic) operating under fast-track authority. The monorail, traveling on a structure of reinforced concrete rails, will connect the main destinations, benefiting more than 501,094 direct users who will experience a reduction in transportation expenditure, saving travel time and improving the quality of life and the environment. The project is slated to start operations in 2024. System Supplier: Alstom.
 
Panama Line 3 Monorail
As part of the Panama metro project, a 34 km (21 mi) long monorail line called Panama Metro Line 3 is being built. Since the Panama Canal's extension, it will be the biggest development in the nation. The route will cross a tunnel being built below the Panama Canal. The 4km-long tunnel, which will be the first of its kind beneath the canal, will be 13 m in diameter and more than 50 m deep. By connecting Albrook and Ciudad del Futuro, the route will cut the distance between them in half, from 90 to 45 minutes on average. The monorail system will be the first in the Americas to employ Japanese technology. Hitachi’s B-CHOP (Energy Storage for Traction Power Supply) system will be incorporated to harness the train’s regenerative energy. By regenerative energy while the train is braking, it will significantly lower the energy usage of the entire rail system. Additionally, to supply energy for the future, it will reduce CO2 emissions. Miami-Miami Beach Monorail
A contract to build a sustainable, large-scale public transportation link between downtown Miami and the city of Miami Beach has been given to the Miami Beach Monorail Consortium, led by Meridiam. This 3.5-mile elevated monorail will improve Miami-Dade County's transportation network by providing a direct connection between the two cities. Two trains would run constantly at 12 trips per hour, each with a 300-rider capacity. Expected completion of the project is 2026. System supplier: Hitachi

Sao Paulo Line 17
Line 17 (Gold) in Sao Paulo is an under-construction monorail project for the São Paulo Metro, linking the metro rail network to Congonhas International Airport. The line will have 14 stations, travelling across the southern and southwestern regions of the city until coming to an end at Morumbí station, and will stretch to a total of 21.5 km (13.4 mi) long. BYD SkyRail will provide its SkyRail as per the contract agreement between them and São Paulo Metro. With a headway of 200 seconds, Line 17 trains will carry 252,000 passengers each day. This is one of the three monorail lines planned for the city. Sutra monorail trains from Scomi Engineering will be provided in 24-car train sets. System Supplier: BYD.

Monterrey Mexico Lines 4,5,6 Monorails
As an environmental and accessible effort by the State government in Monterrey, Mexico, construction will begin on lines 4,5, and 6 of the metro that goes from Santa Catarina, Madero’s, and to the center of Apodaca. There are 41 new stations over the line's 41 kilometers (25.4 miles), with Line 6 in Apodaca having the longest route at 18.9 kilometers (11.7 miles) and 18 stations. Line 5 will have 8.5 kilometers (5.3 miles) and 9 stations and travel to Mederos, whereas Line 4 will travel to Santa Catarina and have 13.6 kilometers (8.4 miles) and 14 stops. The monorail will contribute to more environmentally friendly efforts of the lines.
