SPOTLIGHT ON...

Jessica Johnson
Alaska INBRE GRA

Jynene Black |Alaska INBRE Reporting & Outreach Coordinator

Jessica Johnson is an AY 2021-2022 and 2022 -2023 INBRE GRA in the lab of Dr. Diane O’Brien.  Jessica earned her BS in Biology at Tufts University and her MS at Louisiana State University in 2017.

Her AY 2021-2022 project measured the responses of nonessential amino acid carbon isotope ratios to sugar-sweetened beverage intake (a major source of added sugars), and of essential amino acid carbon isotope ratios to meat intake, in a highly controlled, inpatient feeding study. She also is exploring whether amino acid nitrogen isotope ratios can serve as biomarkers of meat and fish intake in the same controlled feeding study, and this work is in preparation. You can read about it in her second thesis chapter which was just published in the September issue of the Journal of Nutrition and was selected as an Editor’s Choice. The article is titled, “Amino Acid Nitrogen Isotope Ratios Respond to Fish and Meat Intake in a 12-Week Inpatient Feeding Study of Men.”

Dr. O’Brien said It was also the subject of a very glowing editorial published concurrently in the same issue ("From Rough Diamond to Polished Gem"). INBRE supported this work through exceptional requests to Dr. O'Brien's lab for equipment and through the support of Jessica through a GRA (yes, INBRE is cited!). Always a good reminder!  Don’t forget to cite INBRE!

Currently, (AY 2022-2023), Jessica is exploring trophic position estimates using amino acid nitrogen isotope ratios. Alaska INBRE looks forward to reading her next published chapters!
