How remote work withers our social networks

In an opinion piece for the Boston Globe, MIT Senseable City Lab's Carlo Ratti discusses his research exploring the impact of remote work on social relationships. “There does not need to be a complete return to the office; remote work has undeniable benefits, not least flexibility,” writes Ratti. “However, businesses and organizations must develop a new work regime, a methodology that emphasizes the best of what physical space can do for us.”

MIT engineers develop sensors for face masks that help gauge fit

The system measures biological and environmental changes, and detects contact between the mask and the wearer’s skin. The sensor measures physical contact between the mask and the wearer’s face. Canan Dagdeviren — the LG Career Development Professor of Media Arts and Sciences at MIT Media Lab and the corresponding author of the study — says that overall, the masks fit women’s faces much less closely than they fit men’s faces.

MIT Explorers of the Nano Age

MIT Nano celebrated Nano Day on October 9 to "shine a light on the potential of nanoscale discoveries and innovations to help solve some of the biggest challenges facing society today." This year, they created a coloring book to highlight some of the scientists and engineers — including the MIT Media Lab's Deblina Sarkar — "working to make our world a better place." You can download the coloring book here.
