As our very busy growing season comes to a close, it's time to put the SPUR Community Roots Gardens at St. Andrew's and at Temple Sinai to bed for the winter on Sunday, November 6.  That means pulling up plants and covering beds with leaves, seaweed, and other organic material to add nutrients to the soil as they decompose during the winter.  This extra layer of insulation holds moisture in the soil and helps the beds thaw faster for an early spring planting.
Help prepare the garden beds for winter.
By providing fresh produce on a regular basis to organizations that fight food insecurity, the SPUR Community Roots Gardens build a bridge to additional healthy options for households that rely on food pantries.  Because of how quickly fresh produce spoils, it can be challenging for pantries that rely on shelf-stable food to store and distribute fresh fruit, vegetables, and herbs.  The Community Roots Gardens help fill that gap by harvesting and delivering produce on the same day that it is distributed to households experiencing food insecurity, without putting an additional burden on the resources of local food pantries.
Share some tricks and treats with SPUR!
If you find yourself with extra Halloween candy when all the ghouls and goblins have gone home, drop it off at SPUR's candy collection.  With the help of some volunteers, we will be bagging them as a treat to share with grab-and-go meals at local shelters.

For teen volunteers, join us the first week in November to decorate bags, sort the donated candy, then bag it to be brought to local shelters.  Volunteers ages 13-18 are invited to learn more and sign up HERE.

Our office will be open during the following hours for candy drop off:
Tuesday, November 1: 10am - 2pm
Wednesday, November 2: 10am - 2pm and 6pm - 8pm
Thursday, November 3: 10am - 2pm
Friday, November 4: 10am - 2pm and 4pm - 6pm
Saturday, November 5: 3pm - 5pm

Volunteer with us.
Join us in the SPUR office to pin, cut, iron, and sew colorful cotton pillowcases to be used for Bundles of Cheer for the SPUR Holiday Cheer Drive.  Whether you're an experienced seamster or new to needlework, come create with us.

Become a SPUR office volunteer and help with the daily work that keeps our organization running.  Join us in the SPUR office to lend a hand addressing envelopes, assembling materials for up-coming volunteer opportunities, and more of the day-to-day business that helps make everything we do possible.
Providing a hot, nutritious meal for neighbors facing food insecurity is a fun, easy way to volunteer as a family.  Volunteer with your favorite sous chef to prepare 10 servings of a healthy dinner at home to be served at a local shelter.

Through our partnership with Shubie's and Crosby's, SPUR's food rescue program delivers prepared food that would otherwise go to waste to organizations fighting food insecurity thanks to volunteers like you.  Learn more and become a food rescue volunteer today.
