Freedom's Footsteps
Friday-Sunday, October 28-30 | Josiah Henson Museum & Park

Join us in a weekend celebration of Josiah Henson’s emancipation. On October 28, 1830, the Henson family reached Canadian shores embarking on a new life of freedom. We will have activities for all ages to reflect on the past and consider ways to build a better future for generations.

Maryland Emancipation Day @ Oakley Cabin
Saturday, November 5
Oakley Cabin African American Museum & Park
12 - 4 pm


Oakley Cabin commemorates Maryland Emancipation Day with an afternoon celebration for the entire family.

Join quilting master, Mrs. Kyna Clemons in completing our “Freedom Quilt” by creating your own quilt squares, archaeological hands-on activities, hearth cooking demonstrations and guided tours. Master storyteller, Gordon Parks presents traditional African folk tales, 2 – 3:30pm. 
Maryland Emancipation Day @ Woodlawn Manor
Saturday, November 5
Woodlawn Manor Cultural Park 
10 am - 4 pm


Join us as we commemorate Maryland Emancipation Day – a celebration of the end of slavery in the state of Maryland. Two guided hikes will be offered Saturday, November 5.

Museum admission will be free.

Explore history by hiking the Underground Railroad Experience Trail. Enjoy a self-guided hike, or sign up in advance for a guided hike. Walk the peaceful and historic park grounds, and visit the Woodlawn Museum in the 1832 stone barn or the Woodlawn Manor House.

Commemorate Maryland Emancipation Day at Harper Cabin with living history presentations by the Female Reenactors of Distinction (FREED), traditional African American folktales by master storyteller, Renee Emanuel and musical performances by Linda Harris.
