Feature Exhibitions

All our feature exhibitions are located on the 3rd floor of the Anvil Centre.

NEW WESTMINSTER MUSEUM

The New Westminster Museum tells the city's story from its earliest days through a long-term exhibition and through temporary exhibitions focused on different topics and themes.

RECONCILING

Gallery 7 (Anvil Centre)
February 16 – June 26 2022
Extended December 2022

Through three installations, Reconciling addresses truths attached to acts of reconciliation. Haida/Nisga’a artist Luke Parnell explores a feeling of disenchantment through his piece Neon Reconciliation Explosion; the downed statue of Judge Begbie addresses the imposition of foreign laws on a land; and the 215 shoes placed at New Westminster’s cenotaph reflects our community’s response to the Residential School legacy in Canada.

CELEBRATING BLACK HISTORY IN CANADA THROUGH TESSELLATION AND PORTRAITURE

Gallery 2 (Anvil Centre)
February 2 – June 19 2022
Extended December 2022

Moved by a push for greater social justice, NWSS Art students researched prominent figures from Black History in Canada and share their contributions in black and white tessellation patterns and portraits. Equal parts ‘black’ and ‘white’ in these works challenges a Eurocentric-lens that is too often applied when discussing history by featuring People of Colour (POC) and Black Canadians in an equally starring role. Each student provides a thoughtful artist statement with their portrait.

Author Talk with Bruce McIvor
Join us in partnership with the library as Dr. Bruce McIvor discusses his book, Standoff: How Reconciliation Fails Indigenous People and How to Fix It. In this series of concise and thoughtful essays,  Bruce explains why reconciliation with Indigenous peoples is failing and what needs to be done to fix it.
Dr. Bruce McIvor, lawyer and historian, is a partner at First Peoples Law LLP, a law firm dedicated to defending and advancing Indigenous Peoples’ inherent and constitutionally protected title, rights and treaty rights. His work includes both litigation and negotiation on behalf of Indigenous Peoples. Bruce is recognized nationally and internationally as a leading practitioner of Aboriginal law in Canada.
