Extra Credit with Professor Mark Sivak! 📝
Here I share something design or tech related from the week for those looking for just a little extra credit.

Meta had a developer’s conference for their XR technology this week and I want to talk about the new Quest Pro headset, although the legs announcement is pretty great too. The Oculus Quest 2 was the most popular headset in VR history and it really is a nice piece of technology so let’s quickly talk about the new Quest Pro. Beyond the standard better tech specs like better displays and better graphics and processing hardware Meta is touting a few features. First is eye tracking and facial recognition technology to give your avatar a more realistic look the downside that your face data will be collected and stored by Meta, I hope they talk more about data security as this rolls out.
The next feature I think is more important and is showing up in more VR headsets and that is the ability to do Mixed Reality. What they mean by mixed reality is that outward facing cameras will give you a view of the world around you with overlaid digital/virtual elements. This is a key feature to actually having people wear these and collaborate as it is very difficult to be locked away in your own headset and interact with people in the same room. We are still quite far from Meta’s dream of AR glasses that look like normal glasses but the Pro looks like an impressive device that I look forward to trying.
