Stormwater Stars workshops return for fall

The fall season of these FREE workshops begins November 13.

Stormwater Stars workshops provide ideas on how to manage rain that falls around the spaces where you live, work, and play. You’ll receive an overview of different ways to handle stormwater issues, and get plenty of hands-on practice in restoring soils, naturescaping with native plants, creating porous pathways, and more!

All workshop attendees will receive a free native plant as a thank you for participating in the workshop! As a health safety precaution, workshop size is limited, so sign up soon to secure your spot.

All are welcome at these family friendly events! For requests for physical, cultural, technological and/or any other accommodation, please contact us.

Pre-registration is required. You can learn more and sign up at www.stormwaterstars.org/events. For questions, email hello@stormwaterstars.org or call 503-865-6759.

Stormwater Stars is a program of Neighbors West-Northwest and the Westside Watershed Resource Center, in partnership with and funded by generous contributions from West Multnomah Soil & Water Conservation District and City of Portland Bureau of Environmental Services.

Join us for No Ivy Day on Saturday, October 29!

Volunteer activities are taking place across Portland during this annual event.

We are excited to partner with Friends of Fanno Creek Headwaters to host a project site as part of Portland Parks & Recreation's No Ivy Day at the end of this month. We will be removing ivy and other weeds near Fanno Creek, as well as planting some native shrubs, and adding mulch to some parts of the project site. Instruction, tools, gloves, and snacks will be provided!

There are also many other project sites all over Portland that you can get involved with. Sign up for our event here, and learn more about other No Ivy Day activities by clicking the flyer below.

Treebate helps you save money on trees this planting season

Receive a utility discount when you plant a tree.

Have you been thinking about planting a tree in your yard but need a nudge? The City of Portland offers a one-time credit – a Treebate – to sewer/stormwater/water customers who plant trees in their residential yards. Treebate credits your utility bill for 50% of the purchase price of each tree planted, up to $50 for large-sized trees, $30 for medium-sized trees, $20 for small-sized trees, and $10 for fruit trees. Fall is a great time to plant a tree (once it starts raining again, of course)!

Why does the city provide this credit? Trees are an important part of our watershed. Even if you don’t live right on the water, trees in your neighborhood help to protect water quality and quantity. Trees intercept the rain and hold soil in place, reducing erosion. Trees also add critical organic matter to the soil, which helps the soil to act more like a sponge, soaking up rain water and releasing it slowly back to plants and streams. On average, a mature tree in Portland captures almost 600 gallons of rain in a year!

Treebate is an annual program for trees planted during the current planting season. Treebate runs September 1, 2022 to April 30, 2023. More info about the program, including contact info for questions and details on how to enroll, can be found here.
