Ben Esposito Quartet

Ben Esposito headlines this great band. As a drummer who is emerging through the scene as one of the top call musicians, he has pulled together a tremendous band.

Espositio is a local musician - born and raised in Alameda. He was a college freshman studying music education and performance at Chicago’s DePaul University when the pandemic hit, and had been playing weekly at a Baptist Church on Chicago’s South side as well as working with the great guitarist Bobby Broom and bassist Dennis Carroll. He came back home to the Bay Area and soon got busy playing with great players, both budding talents and seasoned pros (like the three with him on this gig), to raise money for social justice causes.

Ben is joined by sax legend Howard Wiley - Wiley’s love of jazz and arranging led him to fuse his jazz sounds with funk. Wiley has toured internationally, recorded and performed with artists including Miss Lauryn Hill, Sheila E, Cory Henry, Christian McBride, Chester Thompson and more.

Matt Clark is a major fixture in the San Francisco jazz scene. He studied. at Oberlin Conservatory, then moved to the Bay Area becoming an in-demand rhythm section player. He has played with Bobby Hutcherson, Marcus Shelby, and Joshua Redman among others.

Bassist Laura Welland studied and played with John Clayton and toured with greats like Joe LaBarbera & Bill Mays. A consummate performer, she is making a mark in the jazz world.

An Evening of Flamenco

Flamenco, which UNESCO recently recognized as part of the World’s Intangible Cultural Heritage, is a complex art form incorporating poetry, singing (cante), guitar playing (toque), dance (baile), polyrhythmic hand-clapping (palmas), and finger snapping (pitos). It often features the call and response known as jaleo, a form of “hell raising,” involving hand clapping, foot stomping, and audiences’ encouraging shouts. Nobody really knows where the term “flamenco” originated, but all agree that the art form began in southern Spain—Andalusia and Murcia—but was also shaped by musicians and performers in the Caribbean, Latin America, and Europe.

SticklerPhonics

Jazz is an art form defined by surprise and uncertainty, but one safe bet is that Scott Amendola’s presence on the bandstand means that something interesting is about to go down. The Berkeley drummer has provided a turbo-charged flow of creativity for the Bay Area music scene since the mid-1990s both as a ubiquitous sideman (Charlie Hunter, T.J. Kirk, and Jenny Scheinman) and a bandleader with a knack for composing thrilling anthems.

His latest combo is SticklerPhonics featuring tenor saxophonist Raffi Garabedian and trombonist Danny Lubin-Laden. A Modern Micro Brass Band... Jazz, Groove, Funk, and much more! Drums, saxophone, and trombone, why not? With each player in The SticklerPhonics, the concept of working as a unit is crucial. Playing in the pocket, giving each other space, getting the audience to move... Like nothing you’ve heard. Playing original music.

Straight from America’s heartland, we introduce you to Kevin “B.F.” Burt. He absolutely crushed it at the 2018 International Blues Challenge, taking home top honors in the Solo/Duo, Solo/Duo Guitar, and Harmonica categories. In 2019 the Iowa native was a Blues Music Award nominee for Heartland and Soul, (Best Emerging Artist Album). We think you’ll fall in love with his expressive, powerhouse of a voice. His unique delivery ranges from the sweetest, fullest, juiciest come-on to the most playful growl. You’ll hear the Bill Withers in his soulful expression and phrasing, and some of the lilt and vulnerability of Aaron Neville. And when he blows that harp, you’ll be hooked.

This is one of the best blues performances you will ever see!
