ARDC Leadership Series: Industry and Research Sector Forum:  26-Oct
The ARDC leadership series provides leaders, influencers and decision makers in academia, government and industry with an opportunity to work through big data challenges affecting researchers in Australia.

This 3rd forum will feature an array of high profile speakers and explore challenges and opportunities in improving research translation and the role data as a key research output can play in this space, showing how collaboration can benefit both research and industry.

When:  26 October, 1 - 3.30pm AEDT
Where:  In-Person in Melbourne & Online

NCI Adapter Allocation Scheme – Simplified Access for EMCRs:  Closes 30-Oct
The NCI Adapter Scheme offers a streamlined path to access HPC and cloud resources at NCI to all Australian researchers.  The simple application process and rapid turnaround time make it perfect for EMCRs building a track record of grant scheme success and increasing their computational science ambitions.

Postdoctoral researchers are now eligible to apply as Lead CIs, without direct funding in their name.  Allocations of up to 250 thousand service units at NCI for the first quarter of 2023 are now available, with applications closing on the 30th of October.

For more information, visit https://nci.org.au/users/how-access-nci/adapter-scheme.
End of Year Training Offering from NCI:  from 8-Nov
NCI is offering programming and AI/ML courses over November to conclude our training calendar for 2022 and prepare for 2023.  We’re very excited to be hosting multiple teams of GPU programmers and computational scientists at NCI over the end of October and early November for an HPC-AI Hackathon.

Available to Australian researchers whether beginner or advanced, the Programming in C course on 8-9 November is a great way to build technical skills.  Then, on the 15th and 23rd of November we will run two discipline-specific AI/ML on Gadi courses – Natural Language Processing and Materials Science respectively.

Vocabulary Symposium 2022:  14 to 15-Nov
The symposium will bring together users, creators and publishers of vocabularies across domains and sectors in Australia to share experiences and identify requirements for FAIR vocabularies underpinning cross-domain data.  It will cover the following:
  1. Cross-domain vocabularies in practice
  2. Extending vocabulary use across domains
  3. Current best practices in vocabulary management and governance in Australia
  4. Vocabulary services and technologies
  5. Social and institutional challenges and opportunities in the adoption of vocabularies.
When:  14 & 15 November.
Where:  In-Person & Online.

NCI Supercomputer Supporting Indigenous Health Outcomes
NCI, Australia’s leading supercomputing and big data facility, is working with The Australian National University (ANU) to offer no-cost computing and data storage to the National Centre for Indigenous Genomics (NCIG).  Together, NCI and ANU are covering the costs of 10 million units of computing time per year and 500 Terabytes of data storage, $186,000 of equivalent value.  This covers NCIG’s computing and data needs, and provides NCIG a reliable foundation on which to keep developing its nationally significant genomic resources.

Exploring New Ways of Exhibiting and Preserving Digital Media
ACMI, Australia’s museum of screen culture, celebrates the past, present and future of the moving image, across film, TV, video games, digital culture, and art.

AARNet’s high-performing low-latency network infrastructure underpins ACMI’s exhibitions and public programs, as well as collaborations with the research and academic community that are driving innovations in media, technology and user experience for museums.

ACMI is focused on addressing challenges around the preservation of digital artefacts in its own growing collection and for collecting institutions in general, to ensure that they are accessible to future generations.

Strategic Investment in Identifiers Could Save $24 Million per Year
The Australian Research Data Commons (ARDC) and the Australian Access Federation (AAF) commissioned the MoreBrains Cooperative to undertake an analysis of the incentives for adoption of persistent identifiers (PIDs) by the Australian research sector.  The report, published on 1 October 2022, found that using persistent identifiers in the Australian research sector could save $24 million per year and 38,000 person days in wasted effort every year.

For more information, go to:  https://ardc.edu.au/article/strategic-investment-in-identifiers-could-save-24-million-and-38000-person-days-per-year/.

Alternatively, attend the Wednesday afternoon session at the eResearch Conference next week, when Josh Brown, who undertook the study, explains it all.
