 LGBTQ Community Centers Save Lives!

While our CEO, Cara Dessert, returns from parental leave, we are excited to feature our fabulous staff members as guest authors. Today, we hear from Kim Fountain (She, They), The Center's Deputy Chief Executive Officer.

Dear Center Community,

Hello, my name is Kim Fountain (she, they) and I am the Deputy CEO at The Center and this week's E-News guest author. As we get ready to celebrate National LGBT Center Awareness Day on October 19th, I want to highlight the impact that LGBTQ centers make in changing and even saving lives in this country and around the world.

The San Diego LGBT Community Center is part of a growing network of 290 LGBTQ centers in the U.S. all working locally to ensure that our community has the opportunity not just to survive, but to thrive. LGBTQ centers are the heart and the hope of each LGBTQ community they serve, providing community, health and housing resources, civic engagement opportunities, connection, and support.

When I started my work here at The Center just six months ago, I felt it was important to go back to my roots in the LGBTQ movement. In order to meet the San Diego community, I attended community events, met with representatives from partner organizations, and worked a rotating shift at The Center’s Welcome Desk. There is no better place to learn about the real-life needs, struggles, and the joys that community members bring with them when they arrive. It is brilliant to see their faces light up, even if they are still feeling tentative, when they walk through the doors and are greeted with, “Welcome to Your Center!” It reminds me of the number of times throughout my work at various LGBTQ centers that people have returned, even years later, to say, “The Center saved my life, and I wanted you to know that.”

Like LGBTQ centers around the country, your Center is not only evolving with the changes in our communities, we are proactively advocating for change at every level of society. LGBTQ centers do everything with heart, in a way that responds to what people tell us they need.

One of the most dangerous ways that mainstream culture can inflict harm is to tell us we are alone and vulnerable because there is something wrong with us: parents harm their LGBTQ children in their homes; bullies harm students in places of learning; healthcare providers invoke their freedom to not serve us, saying it goes against their beliefs. LGBTQ centers bring these issues to light, gathering community stories and honoring lived experiences so that we can create spaces within our walls where everyone is working hard to ensure the safety of anyone who walks through our doors.

This is our work – to create these spaces designed to help and protect us by asserting our humanity and showing the world our pride. Those of us who work at LGBTQ centers are part of the community and have first-hand knowledge of the real and everyday needs of our community. We provide understanding, empathy, and compassion when it’s needed most.

Around the world and even in the U.S., we are seeing anti-LGBTQ pushback primarily directed at young people and their rights. LGBTQ centers are a safe space for everyone in our community to be valued and supported. Young people who have accessed our services over the last 50 years have weathered anti-LGBTQ attacks in part because they found community here at The Center.

As the beacon for our regional LGBTQ community in San Diego, each day we actively recommit to be a more vibrant, bold, innovative, safe, and modern Center than the day before. I hope you know that you are welcomed, valued, and supported here at The Center. We look forward to providing the same protections, services, and community spaces today and for the next generations to come. Your Center is here for you!

In Solidarity,

Kim Fountain, PhD (Pronouns: She, They)
Deputy Chief Executive Officer

PS: Celebrate LGBT Center Awareness Day with us by participating in one of our Center events or discussion groups, whether virtual or in-person!

FROM OUR PARTNERS
2022 U.S Trans Survey
Launching October 19, 2022: Take the Pledge!

THIS IS OUR TIME:  BE HEARD, BE COUNTED.
The U.S. Trans Survey is the largest survey of trans people, by trans people, in the United States. The USTS documents the lives and experiences of trans and nonbinary people ages 16+ in the U.S. and U.S. territories.

USTS reports have been a vital resource, including the reports on the experiences of people of color and reports by state. In 2015, nearly 28,000 people took the USTS. A lot has happened since then – and it’s time to conduct the USTS again in 2022.

Help us continue to be the largest, most diverse sample across all identities. Please spread the word to ensure that people of color, older people, those who live in rural areas, immigrants, Spanish speakers, those who are HIV+, and others hear about the survey. More than ever, it's important to ensure that trans voices will shape the future.
