Vote no

The Diocese of Little Rock is encouraging Catholics to vote against Issue 4 on the Nov. 8 ballot. If approved, the constitutional amendment would legalize recreational marijuana in the state for anyone 21 and older. Other states like Colorado have done studies on the effects of adult-use cannabis and found increased traffic deaths and DUI arrests.
In Colorado, marijuana-related traffic deaths increased from 11 percent in 2013 to ___ percent in 2020.

B. 18
C. 20

JUST ONE MINUTE

In his book Eucharist (paid link), Bishop Robert Barron recounts this encounter of the young Flannery O’Connor: “In 1850 Flannery O'Connor was brought by friends to dinner with prominent author Mary McCarthy and her husband. At the time O'Connor, who would eventually blossom into one of the greatest Catholic authors of the 20th century, was just commencing her career, and there was no question that she was a junior member of this elite circle of conversation. As the evening drew on, the talk turned to the Eucharist, and McCarthy, who had been raised Catholic but had fallen away from the Church, remarked she thought of the Eucharist as a symbol and implied it was a pretty good one. She undoubtedly intended this condescending observation as a friendly overture to the Catholic O'Connor. But O'Connor responded in a shaky voice, ‘Well, if it's just a symbol to hell with it.’ In its bluntness, clarity and directness, O'Connor’s remark is one of the best statements of the Catholic difference in regard to the Eucharist. For Catholics, the Eucharist is the body and blood of Jesus.”

Reflection: Spend some time today in conversation with Jesus about your belief in the Eucharist. Explore with him how you came to believe.

St. Luke

Oct. 18

Early historians said this author of the third Gospel and the Acts of the Apostles was born to a pagan family in Antioch (Turkey). According to Paul’s letters and Acts, he was a doctor and Paul’s companion during his later journeys and imprisonment in Rome. He is the patron of physicians and surgeons.

Uncomfortable situation

I just accepted a new job in a field I love three weeks ago. Yesterday, I was recruited and offered a position by a huge company for the same kind of position, and they pay more than twice what I’m making now. I want to handle things well with my current employer and do the right thing.

QUOTE UNQUOTE

"We are always tempted to start from ourselves rather than from God, to put our own agendas before the Gospel, to let ourselves be caught up in the winds of worldliness in order to chase after the fashions of the moment or to turn our back the time that providence has granted us."

-- Pope Francis Oct. 11 for the 60th anniversary of the council's opening
