Notes From The Editor

Aloha friends of SOKO, and welcome to the Pumpkin Spice edition of the SOKO newsletter. This Newsletter is published quarterly, and will provide updates on the activities of the SOKO artists. You can learn more about us, and view and purchase our works, by visiting our website, www.sokoartists.com, and by contacting the individual artists whose contact information can be found in the newsletter.

We have some exciting news to share: We have added three more new members to the SOKO roster. That means new venues, more artists sharing studios for one-stop shopping, and even more to choose from at our 8th Annual Studio Tour, February 25-26, 2023. Look for brochures in January with further details.

Many of the SOKO artists will also be participating in an exhibition and sale at SKEA’s annual meeting on Sunday, February 5, from 2-5 pm at the SKEA building in Honaunau.

More events may be added as the opportunity presents itself; you will be notified via email.

Introducing our New SOKO Members
Piergiorgio (Peter) Barbarich
Growing up in Verona, Italy, I loved to draw, paint and make clay forms. In California’s SF Bay Area, I studied art and design at San Mateo Community College and sculpted wood and stone at the 1870 Art Center in Belmont. Then, in Vienna, Austria and later in Brussels, Belgium where I attended a 5-year sculpture academy, I sculpted stone, metal and wood, showing my work in local exhibits. All my current pieces are of Hawaiian hardwood. My work has been shown at Volcano Art Center, the Wailoa Center in Hilo and the Firehouse gallery in Waimea.

While beauty in nature is my main guide and inspiration, human virtues and aspirations also loom large in my work.  After I arrive at a concept for a new piece, and extract the general form, I strive for flowing lines, grace, balance, and resolution.  Often combining them, I straddle the abstract, the representational and the fantastic. In an interplay with the medium at hand, I try to showcase its intrinsic qualities and offer the viewer a sensual experience. My work is most successful when it elicits a reaction in its viewers.
Ken Geer
My passion for drawing, creating art, and designing began at a young age. My parents encouraged my interest in art and instilled a love of learning, nature, and the importance of conservation in me. With my curiosity about our world, the adventures of explorers, the work of inventors and scientists, and predictions about life in the future, it seemed like a natural progression for me to combine these interests into a career.
I attended the University of Bridgeport in Bridgeport, CT and graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Industrial Design. My career as an internationally recognized product design consultant and footwear expert spanned more than thirty years. Additionally, I am named as an inventor on 21 U.S. patents. Since retiring from the footwear industry, I am blessed to be able to pursue my love for watercolor painting, pen & ink drawings, and photography full-time.
Hawaii is a special place for me. I’m inspired every day by the beautiful scenery of Hawaii, the great weather, the marine life, and the aloha spirit of the people. My hope is that through my work, you will be too.
Richard Rochkovsky
“My earliest painting memories are from painting with my Dad on the beach, feeling the sun on my face, the wind in my, at that time, blond hair, and the sand under my feet—the ocean was there to wash off the inevitable mess. I haven’t outgrown any of it, including the mess.”
Graduated with a Bachelor of Architecture and credits for a Minor in Art from the University of Virginia in 1972. Practiced Architecture in New Jersey, Virginia, Washington State, and Hawaii.
“I don’t paint things the way they look—I paint them the way they are.”
“For me, painting furiously and intensely for 3 hours, trying to capture the ever changing moods and character of a scene, is the culmination of everything that I’ve done and know—the challenge, of course, is to forget all of that and just paint—after all, it’s just light, right?”
Home base for Richard is the wonderful Blue Seas Artisans Gallery at the Keauhou Shopping Center where you can find him to talk story on Sundays from 2-6 and at his website:  https://www.RichardRochkovsky.com
