Top Song on theMEL: Evvie McKinney Discovers Where She Truly Feels at Home
Grace Oliver
Evvie McKinney grew up attending a church in Memphis, Tennessee. She was the youngest of seven children, and her family went to church to worship three days a week. Thus, she had many opportunities to sing and lead worship in her childhood. Over the years, she knew that the Lord had something incredible in store for her, and she wanted Him to be glorified through her music. Despite the criticism she has received in the past for her faith in Jesus, McKinney has learned that genuine faith and trust means dismissing doubt and fear. Her faith continues to impact the decisions she’s made, both in her personal and professional life. Today, she finds great contentment knowing that she is exactly where God wants her to be and is able to share her faith with others through her music.

Everybody is creative. It’s one of the amazing ways God has made us in his image. However, creativity doesn’t just happen. It takes a little courage, contemplation, prayer, risk, failure, collaboration, grit, and finally, some action! Ultimately, you have to give a Barney-Fife-hitch-of-the-pants and just go do it. See what happens. It may work. It may not. But that’s why we are here learning at The MEL, right?
When astrophysicist turned photographer, Mary Jo Hoffman spoke at our department’s first ever MEL Conference last month, she challenged us to try something creative every day without worrying whether it’s perfect or not. She says you’ll be amazed at what happens in that consistency. She’s posted one picture a day for the past ten years on her STILL blog. Some days are elaborate multi-hour arrangements. Some days are last second grabs of a clump of grass. She says the discipline of the daily work will bring joy and opportunity.
The only way we can improve is to keep at it. It takes hard work, motivation, and prayer - “not by our strength, or our might but in the spirit of the Lord!” It is our prayer that as you discover, grow and build on your creative endeavors, you will flourish in the days ahead and find your voice in the world. That will not necessarily be a quick journey. It’s hard. But as Jeremiah 32:40 says, “God makes an everlasting covenant to never stop doing good for you.” (Notice that promise says good, not easy.)
I know the temptation may be to blow things off, bail, run, or give up. Stay with it. God is at work, still. He is never any less true. Keep pursuing Christ and your craft. When things happen to us that are out of control, we must remember that God is teaching us something about himself to you. Look for it. It is an unlikely yet amazing thing. "Trust the slow work of God...Give the Lord the benefit that His hand is still leading you through. Accept the anxiety of feeling yourself in suspense and incomplete" (Pierre Chardin).
Trust in the Lord. Everything is happening right on schedule. Even if it rarely seems that way.
