DUT RANKED TOP 5 IN SOUTH AFRICA IN 2023 WORLD UNIVERSITY RANKINGS

The 2023 Times Higher Education World University Rankings were announced in London yesterday (Wednesday, 12 October 2022). The Durban University of Technology (DUT) was ranked in the Top 5 of all universities in South Africa. This means that DUT also remains the number 1 University of Technology in the country. DUT was ranked in the top one third out of a total of 1799 universities, from 104 countries worldwide.

Acting Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Research, Innovation and Engagement at DUT, Professor Keolebogile Motaung said, “It’s a happy moment to celebrate DUT’s success and achievement. Thanks to the leadership and support of our Vice-Chancellor and Principal Professor Thandwa Mthembu.

DHET REPRESENTATIVES VISIT DUT’S STATE-OF-THE-ART INFRASTRUCTURE

The Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) visited the DUT Durban Campuses on Friday, 7 October 2022 to determine the progress made by the institution on the Long-Term Spatial Plan as supported by DHET.

The R1 billion state-of-the-art infrastructure project which aligns with the university’s strategy, ENVISION2030, began in 2019.

The revered guests included DHETs Mr Bhekithemba Mlambo-Chief Director: Infrastructure Support, Mr Donald Kubayi -Deputy Director: Infrastructure Support, Dr Ncedo Xhala – Deputy Director: Infrastructure Support. They were hosted by DUT’s Deputy Vice-Chancellor: People and Operations, Dr Vuyo Mthethwa and the Senior Director: Real Estate Management, Mr Thabani Mhlongo.

DUT-LED CARBON LITERACY FOR YOUTH EMPLOYABILITY AND JOB CREATION (CL4YEJC) NETWORK PARTNERSHIP TEAM SCOOPS THREE IAU OSCARS AWARDS

The Carbon Literacy for Youth Employability and Job Creation (CL4YEJC) Network Partnership team led by the Durban University of Technology (DUT) was recently honoured with three Innovation for African Universities (IAU) Oscar Awards, for having the project that has made the biggest impact. Two awards were given to the team’s Project leader, Professor Sunday Ojo for being the Best Supporting Actor who has given the most support in the IAU programme and for being the Best Costume-Best Dressed participant, proudly always dressed in his African attires.
The DUT-led Network partnership includes the Sheffield Hallam University, UK; Durban University of Technology, South Africa; Innovate Durban, South Africa; Kisii University, Kenya; and Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Nigeria.

PROFESSOR ALAIN TSCHUDIN’S 100 DAYS IN OFFICE AS THE PROFESSOR OF PEACE STUDIES AND DIRECTOR OF ICON AT DUT

The newly appointed Professor of Peace Studies and Director of International Centre of Nonviolence (ICON) at the Durban University of Technology (DUT), Professor Alain Tschudin shares his experience of his 100 days in office. He commenced his duties in June 2022 and feels it has been an interesting journey to date.

Joining the DUT community has been a blessing for Prof Tschudin as a former research associate of the university and also this opportunity has brought him back to his hometown, Durban. He revealed that his appointment was quite serendipitous, as he had spent such a great deal of time away from Durban and South Africa in his previous role.

MTHIYANE AIMS TO CREATE AN ANTI-RACIST SOCIETY THROUGH HIS COOKING SHOW, ANTI-RACIST HOT DOG

A Durban University of Technology (DUT) Alumnus in Town and Regional Planning, Wandile Mthiyane has recently launched a cooking show called the Anti-Racist Hot Dog.

His Durban cooking show launch had a great turnout of over 70 people, including the US Consulate General in Durban, Anne Linnee.

“We had a great time eating hot dogs and having a constructive dialogue about curating and maintaining an inclusive culture within our businesses, schools, and communities. We have lunch-and-learn experiences with hot dogs, a cooking show, and insightful dialogue for companies looking to build inclusive cultures. Our one-hour educational experiences fuse fun cultural learning with informative and interactive discussions centred around home recipes.
