Glow in the dark pickleball - Saturday November 19

My glow in the dark pickleball day will be Saturday, November 19, at the Boys/Girls Club at 1463 Prince of Wales at Meadowlands.  I will have 3 or 4 different types of glow in the dark balls, since I don't know which ones will bounce the best and will be easiest to see.   The Boys/Girls Club floor is laminate (not file), as shown in the picture above.  The walls are far away from the pickleball court, very spacious which is important to minimize the risk of running into the wall.  We will have glow in the dark tape (for the nets, for the lines, for the walls, for your paddles, etc), glow in the dark t shirts, glow in the dark face paint, and of course, glow in the dark balls.

I am trying to ensure that each group has a mixture of Gatineau, Orleans Tennis Club, Manotick Tennis Club, Amberwood Golf Club, Valleystream Pickleball Club, and Kingston/Brockville/Cornwall area players.

Some events are partially full already, but expressions of interest can be sent by email to:
dave_ottawa@live.ca.  I may not get to you right away, as I am trying to ensure a balance of players from Gatineau and each pickleball club, as well a a good balance of men/women, and some older, some younger players.  Given this will be a positive, fun day, priority will be given to players known to be friendly, very positive people.  No room for negativity/conflict on this fun day.

I'll have a waiting list of players for each group in case I receive cancellations due to injury/travel.

Spectators will be welcome, but must bring 2 food donations to the Ottawa Food Bank if you want to come in and watch.

Pickleball fundraiser in Brockville (Sat January 28)

You may have heard a few stories about Brockville pickleball in the news the last couple of years
https://ottawa.ctvnews.ca/brockville-pickleball-players-facing-verbal-assaults-vandalism-1.5484552

After months of conflict and ordeal at the location of the Stowger Park pickleball courts, fundraising efforts are underway towards the construction of new pickleball courts in Brockville (Brockville Memorial Centre).

A fundraising event is being held Saturday, January 28 at Stingers Paintball in Brockville (also home to Brockville Racquet Club, 125 Stewart Boulevard); the owner is donating the day's court time to the organizers, and proceeds from the tournament fees will go towards the proposed new courts.   NOTE:  this is a converted Zellers Store (with soccer, basketball, baseball, axe throwing, and pickleball), so the floors are tile floors (like you would find in a department store), and are not a great surface to play on (inferior to school gyms and most Ottawa community centres).  As well, there pillars near some of the courts so you have to play cautiously. It is a good cause though, and the people who play at Stingers are very nice, so manage your expectations if you want to support this good cause.

6 games (see picture above);  $25 per player;  to register, email Kurt atks_hall@hotmail.com.  He will let you know if he still has space available, and if so, can provide instructions on payment.

Beginner/novice skill:
  • Group 1:  8am-10am
  • Group 2:  10am-12pm
Intermediate skill:
  • Group 1:  12pm-2pm
  • Group 2:  2pm-4pm
Advanced skill:
  • Group 1:  4pm-6pm
  • Group 2:  6pm-8pm
NOTE:  I understand the Advanced group is likely going to be a mix of 3.0 and 3.5 players, with a small number of 4.0+ players.   Given that, I suspect that the Intermediate group is likely to be a mix of 2.0, 2.5, and 3.0 players, and I suspect that the novice group will be mostly 2.0 players.

Pickleball coaching options in the Ottawa area

We have several avid players in town who often teach others.  Some players have teaching credentials through a certified pickleball teaching body, while others just can't help but share their passion for the sport and help guide others.

Here are some of the local options (not all options are listed here; I may not know of some, and some told me they are not seeking students to teach at this time).   Check the NCCP, IPTPA, and PPR list of certified coaches at the bottom of this section for additional certified coaches in the area.

NOTE:  the trick in the winter is WHERE to teach; sometimes these teachers have to get creative in where to teach in the winter!

Ottawa Pickleball Association (OPA), including Matt Kawamoto, Ravi Prakash Palaniswamy, Etienne Blaszkewycz
OPA members have access to pro-led clinics, as well as individual lessons through the OPA pros.  Members receive periodic emails with updates on who is offering clinics/lessons.

Kim Brent
Kim has given numerous group clinics in Ottawa, including at the RA Centre, Manotick Tennis Club, Valleystream (rained out), Stingers in Brockville, and other locations.  She has been coaching many location players 1 on 1 as well. She has won several medals at the Canadian National Championships at the highest skill level (including a gold in mixed doubles with pro player Steve Deakin), and many other tournaments. She has a private location where she she can give private lessons.  Ki has her professional Coaching certification with the PPR (Professional Pickleball Registry)
strategicpickleball@gmail.com

Michael Gauthier
Michael has his level 2 certification with the IPTPA, his certification with the (Canadian) National Coaching Certification Program, and his IPTPA ratings specialist certification (i.e. he can assess and confirm your skill level according to the IPTPA skill criteria).  Michael was coaching at Manotick Tennis Club and Valleystream this past summer. He is currently recovering from surgery but expects to be teaching again in early 2023.
michael@pickleballstrokes.ca

Ravi Prakash Palaniswamy
He coaches with the Ottawa Pickleball Association and Valleystream Pickleball Club.  He has his Level 2 IPTPA coaching credentials.  He is open to teaching at other locations where a court can be rented.
ravipickleball@gmail.com

Samir Bhatnagar
You may have seen Samir on the courts at Amberwood, Valleystream, or Britannia Yacht Club, including doing some teaching at Amberwood for much of this past season; he has his teaching certification through the Professional Pickleball Registry (PPR). Elsewhere in this newsletter, you will also see that Samir will be on a January 2024 cruise, where cruisers will receive at least one group clinic with Samir.

m2b2@rogers.com

Sara Weiss
This keen player started teaching this past summer to share her passion for the sport, and will be running lessons and clinics at the Kenwood Athletic Club this fall/winter.

Kingston Racquet Centre coming soon!

What a time to be in the Kingston area!

Just a few short weeks after the beautiful Kingston Pickleball Club’s new facility opened on Gardiners Road (west end, just south of 401), the Kingston Racquet Centre (1025 Innovation, east end off highway 15, just south of 401) is about to open!

There will be two brand new sports domes, one of which will offer pickleball programming.  Milos Raonic just became an investor in the company that runs the series of domes in various cities.

Kingston Pickleball Club Grand Opening Sat Oct 29

See picture above for details on the grand opening of the Kingston Pickleball Club (1150 Gardiners Road, Kingston) on Saturday October 29 from 11am-4pm.   As noted further down in the newsletter, Tyrol Shoes are available at the pro shop at the KPC's new facility (there is no Ottawa distributer for Tyrol, so Kingston is probably the closest option), as well as other products (Selkirk, Oliver products, etc.)

CITY OF OTTAWA RECREATION CENTRES (you have to pick on the centre to figure out their actual pickleball schedule)
https://ottawa.ca/en/recreation-and-parks/recreation-facilities/place-listing

The following recreation/community centres in City of Ottawa offer pickleball:  Francois Dupuis (Orleans), Richcraft Kanata, Minto Barrhaven,  Hunt Club Riverside Park, Hintonburg, Nepean Sportsplex, Overbrook (Vanier), CardelREC (Goulbourn/Stittsville), Eva James (Stitsville), Greenboro.
NEW!  The Rideauview Community Centre (4310 Shoreline Drive, Riverside South) is the latest city facility to start offering pickleball.

Francois Dupuis (Orleans, Portobello and Brian Coburn) has the most # of pickleball sessions per week (by far) of any City of Ottawa facility.

Nepean Sportsplex: people with a Class A membership (all inclusive) can now access pickleball (no extra cost).  In the past, those with a Class A membership had to pay extra for pickleball - that is no longer the case.

Heron Road Community Centre:  pickleball drop in is not listed on their website;  the pickleball they offer is available to members of the Heron Road Walking Club; if this location interests you, contact Heron about the walking club first.

https://join.ottawa.ca/fac/102/fall/all/act/58/901/

Facilities that used to offer pickleball (pre COVID) but are no longer:
  • Fisher Park (Holland Avenue) is still closed (COVID related)
  • Dempsey (Russell Road) - they confirmed for me that pickleball is not coming back
  • South Fallingbrook (Orleans) - they confirmed for me that pickleball is not coming back
See local player Ted's website for a quick list of options at City of Ottawa facilities organized by day of the week; he continues to improve his website as he learns more about the city's database with the goal of capturing 100% of the options.   This website is much easier to find pickleball options than going to each individual community centre's website (what you have to do via the City website)

Ottawa Pickleball Association (OPA) leagues - for OPA members
Memberships are not currently available; check the OPA website in early to mid November, in case memberships are offered again to non-members

Kenwood Athletic Club (78 Edward South, Arnprior)
3 quality indoor pickleballs with many many hours of weekly pickleball options, and different membership types to suit your likely pickleball playing habits.  There are many "organized times" (play with strangers), as well as private court booking times.   If you don't want one of the membership types, you can also pay drop in fees only when you play.  Use your computer/laptop for the optimal website viewing experience; the information may be distorted/out of place on some mobile devices.

Reminder: Options for indoor court shoes

With the cold weather, most pickleball play is now going to be indoors. Having just been through a month long shoe shopping experience, here is a list of options.

For wood and tile floors, be sure to purchase indoor court shoes that do not mark the floor.   In the picture above, you will see 5 bottoms of shoes with a "gummy yellow type" sole - these are same for indoor wood/tile floors.

If the soles of the shoes you want to buy to play on hardwood/tile floors does not look like the above picture, ask the salesperson for non-marking soles.   Often, soles that aren't the "gummy/yellow type" colour will actually say non-marking right on the sole so you know they won't damage the floor.

RA CENTRE ONLY:  given the RA centre surface is a tennis court surface (not wood or tile), you will likely want to wear an outdoor court shoe given that indoor court shoes do not last long on a tennis court surface.  Just be sure you only use these outdoor shoes indoors at the RA (don't track in any outside dirt, salt from the winter roads); lets keep the RA Centre in prime condition and only wear clean shoes that have not been worn outside.

Capital Sport within the RA Centre (2451 Riverside Drive)
This new store has by the far the largest selection of indoor court shoes I have ever seen in Ottawa.  This should be in your first stop if you are looking for a variety of options and choice for indoor court shoes for wood/tile pickleball floors.
www.capitalsport.ca

Sporting Life at Landsdowne Park
They have indoor court shoes and outdoor court shoes.  They have only a few in the store, but a large selection online.
https://www.sportinglife.ca/

Updated: Sports 4 (149 Bank Street, and 1371 Woodroffe Avenue)
I have been told they have both indoor and outdoor court shoes, and I hear they have highly trained staff for selling footwear (with professional foot assessments over 40 years in business)
https://sports4.com/

Kunstadt Sports (2 stores on Bank Street, one in Kanata)
The retail shops have moved much of their court shoe inventory to the Kanata warehouse that fulfills their online sales, so the selection in the retail stores is limited right now.
https://kunstadt.com/

Performance Tennis (70A Leonard, Old Ottawa South)
This local shop does have several tennis shoes/court shoes - many are for outdoor surfaces, but a small number of their are non-marking at can be used indoors without worrying about marking up a wood floor.  I was able to purchase a non-marking pair a couple weeks ago.  https://www.performancetennis.ca/

Sportchek

Only a limited selection of court shoes in their stores, but they do have a decent selection online.
https://www.sportchek.ca/

Oliver Sport

Local pickleball player Carlos is the person to contact if you have interest in Oliver Sport shoes.  See the last section of newsletter for his contact information.
https://www.oliver-sport.ca/collections/oliver-indoor-shoes

ACACIA SHOES
Local player Luc (Core PIckleball) is the person to contact if you have interest in ACACIA shoes.  See last section of newsletter for his contact information.

TYROL SHOES

Although we don't have a distributor in Ottawa, the Kingston Pickleball Club (1150 Gardiners Road) now carries Tyrol Shoes in its pickleball pro shop. Go try on a pair if you're curious how Tyrol pickleball shoes stack up to the competition.    The pro shop also carries Oliver Sport gear, and Selkirk pickleball gear.

A few local players in Ottawa do have discount codes for Tyrol Shoes to save you money if you opt to buy Tyrol Shoes online  (see section at bottom of newsletter - Matt/Engage, Sara/Prolite, Mike/TMPR are 3 of the individuals who can give you a Tyrol discount code; I think there are 3-4 others in Ottawa with discount codes as well)

VSP Sports (formerly Volleyball Sports Plus) (Ottawa location 1366 Triole off St Laurent, and Gatineau location 595 Vernon Road)
They have some indoor court shoes, given they serve alot of volleyball players.
https://vsp.net/

Sports Experts/Atmosphere (Gatineau; 1100 maloney ouest, and 207 boul Grives near Saint Raymond/148)
They most likely have some court shoes (indoor and/or outdoor).
https://www.sportsexperts.ca/en-CA/

CANUCK STUFF (Toronto/Vancouver)

Although their Toronto store has recently closed (they always had the best selection of indoor court shoes/volleball shoes I had ever seen at a sports retailer), they still do orders online.
https://www.canuckstuff.com/

Racquet Guys (Markham, 7400 Victoria Park)

Huge selection of court shoes, and pickleball gear.  If you are in the Toronto area, you may want to swing up to this store given their huge selection of products at their Markham store.

Decathlon (St Laurent Boulevard)
A limited number of court shoes
