At the UAB Heersink School of Medicine, we're committed to training primary care physicians to serve our state. We have partnerships with The University of Alabama and Auburn University to offer two, five-year programs for students committed to pursuing careers in rural primary care medicine.

Rural Programs Preview DayCalling all premed students interested in rural medicine! We are hosting a virtual Rural Programs Preview Day on Oct. 18, from 3:00-4:30 p.m.
The Preview Day will include a presentation on both of the rural programs, admissions requirements, and a student panel.

Eligibility and Application Requirements
Applicants to the program must be Alabama residents who have lived in rural Alabama for eight or more years OR have graduated from a rural Alabama high school. Visit our website for detailed instructions on application requirements and deadlines.
The 2024 Rural Medical Program Application will open Nov. 1, 2022. For individuals applying to enter the School of Medicine in 2024, the deadline to submit a completed admissions application is Jan. 20, 2023. Interviews for the programs will be held virtually on Feb. 23, 2023. Accepted individuals will begin the pre-matriculation year in the summer of 2023. |
Rural Medical Scholars Program - Tuscaloosa
The Rural Medical Scholars Program (RMSP) includes a year of prematriculation study that leads to a master’s degree in Rural Community Health from the College of Community Health Sciences at The University of Alabama, followed by four years of medical school. RMSP students complete their clinical training at our Tuscaloosa Regional Medical Campus. |
Rural Medicine Program (RMP) - Auburn/Huntsville
The Rural Medicine Program (RMP) includes a year of prematriculation study at the post-baccalaureate level in the College of Sciences and Mathematics at Auburn University, followed by four years of medical school. RMP students complete their clinical training at our Huntsville Regional Medical Campus.
