First Day School is Open!

For the younger children, ages 0 through kindergarten, the Nursery opens from 10 a.m. to 11:30 each Sunday in the white house.

Children in 1st through 5th grades and Young Friends worship with their families (and all of us) from 10 to 10:20 and then go to their classes with their teachers. 

We are still looking for one paid worker and one volunteer for the Nursery.  Here is the job description for the paid position.  Otherwise, our classes are fully staffed!

Reproductive Justice Working Group

Friends are invited to participate in this meeting to work on our Minute. The Working Group is also interested in your ideas concerning where and how the Minute can be made available to the broader community, and what actions we can take, both as individuals and as a Meeting.  For more information contact the Working Group's Clerk, Sharon Stout (through Breeze).  The proposed draft and Zoom link are here.

Climate Action Working Group

Join us as we educate ourselves, and as we consider substantive, solution-based actions we can take personally, and as a community.  We welcome new members. If you are interested, please contact Ruby Steigerwald or Carole Hoage. Friends Community School Fall Fair

Sunday, October 16 from 12-4 pm

Friends Community School is having its Fall Fair in person this year. The fair will include raffles, games, activities, and food. The Fall Fair takes place each October and is run by the Parents Association to share fall-themed fun, and to raise funds for the Wish List which supports teacher-requested activities. AFM Fall Work Day
Saturday, October 22nd,  from 10 am to 4 pm  

Friends of all ages are encouraged to come and share the joy of working with your hands, taking care of the grounds, and enjoying the fellowship of the day!  We need many hands to do these tasks:  

• Power washing stairs, walkways and plastic playground equipment
• Cutting back brush with clippers, pulling ivy off trees with gloves
• Trimming bushes with hand tools
• Edging sidewalks with weed whacker
• Raking and sweeping driveway
• Picking up sticks, trash and moving wheelbarrows around
• Fence repair
• And more!

New! Kids can get up to 2 SSL hours. Under age 14 should be fully supervised by parent/guardian.  Ages 14 and over can be supervised by House and Grounds committee member.

There will be a potluck lunch as usual!  Bring a dish to share if you feel so inclined.  If you have any questions you can contact Patrick Mulvey through Breeze.

Change Group Second Hour

Michael Levi reported for the Change Group on the progress they are making toward stating our commitment to becoming an anti-racist Meeting.  The group has received many comments and incorporated many suggestions.  Still, the Change Group does not have a clear sense of how the Meeting is led at this time.  Michael invites all to participate in another threshing session during Second Hour on October 23rd.

Considering Friends Community School for Your Child?

Silence & Light for Quaker Newcomers

October 15 to November 12, 2022

So maybe you’ve been spending time with Quakers recently and are beginning to get a handle on what the Meeting is all about, but you still have questions. What do Quakers believe? How does the community function? What does the unusual vocabulary actually mean?

Come to this introductory workshop offered by Friends General Conference to learn more. Michael Levi, a member of Adelphi, will facilitate five Zoom sessions on Saturday afternoons from 1:00 pm-2:30 pm, starting October 15. This program is designed for people who are new to Quakerism and will explore the basics of Friends’ theology and practice. There is a small sliding-scale fee to participate. Assistance from Adelphi Meeting is available if needed; contact the AFM Treasurer to apply. Find more information and registration here.

Walk to End HIV

October 22, 2022, 9 am to noon

Randall Ehrbar and daughter Ruth Ehrbar will be participating in the Walk to End HIV coming up on October 22nd.  This is an important fundraiser for the Whitman-Walker Health, a community health center that has special focus on LGBTQ people and people living with HIV.  Whitman-Walker is also one of the few primary care providers in DC's Ward 8. Randall works at Whitman-Walker, and his primary focus there is working with people addressing substance use issues, and with trans people. Here are two links where you can support their walk:

White Awake: Roots Deeper than Whiteness

White Awake will be hosting their annual online foundations course, "Roots Deeper than Whiteness: Building Emotional Strength and Political Clarity for Collective Liberation." Co-facilitated by (Adelphi's own) David Dean, this anti-racism offering nurtures emotional resilience for responding to racism and navigating the work of social change. It fosters a sense of personal identity and connection to one's own history.  And it encourages political direction for one's life and work. Learn more and register here. Land Reparations: A Journey of the Heart

The land on which we live, work, and worship is land to which its original inhabitants belonged and from whom it was stolen. Acknowledging this systemic land theft is only a first step in healing the injuries a pervasive settler/colonist culture inflicted on Indigenous Peoples. We are now at the crossroads of an incredible opportunity to shift our consciousness from "we-them" to "we-us."  Here is the link for more information. Called To Create: Black Artists of the American South

Many Black artists worked with little recognition, often using recycled materials displayed in their yards, porches or boarded-up storefronts. These artists drew on deep cultural and spiritual traditions to create some of the finest art of our time, including the Gee’s Bend quilts. Experience their lives and stories. Details are here.
