Rachel Rogers Correspondence

Letter from the Editor.

Spooky season is upon us. My neighborhood has been decorated for Halloween since the dawn of time and the fall rains have yet to start, so the only indicator of Halloween's proximity is the ever-extending arms of the night that hold what's left of the daylight hostage.

Amiright?

Boy has it been dark when I wake up in the morning. I know it's morning because I can hear my parents feeding all but one of the cats in the kitchen, which is directly above my room. The other cat is sitting 4 inches from my head staring at me silently until I wake up.

I saw Florence and the Machine last weekend. Florence sure can sing! She also can dance and run and did both of those things while singing with the force of one thousand airs. When she was up there, I was like, that's an artist and an athlete. I get that same exact feeling watching basketball. The athleticism and grace? Whew! Humans are extraordinary.

Eugene's very own Japanese Breakfast opened the show. I don't listen to a ton of Japanese Breakfast but band leader Michelle Zauner is a local with a successful band, has scored a video game, and has. NYT bestseller under her belt!

My biggest accomplishment during that concert was watching Michelle Zauner play piano across from the guitarist and saying, "Are they in love?" Because it turns out they are married.

If love is in the air, you don't need to tell me twice. Or even once. I'm on the case!

Except for when two people I knew were secretly dating for a year without me knowing and without them telling anyone. But maybe love wasn't really in the air, if you know what I'm saying!!!

I walked around the east and west esplanade of Portland this weekend. Always good to get a pulse on the river and the river-adjacent goings-on. I didn't make any friends on the walk but I didn't make any enemies either (that I know of!).

Pie. I ate pie this week. I was supposed to go out for pie last week for work but it never ended up happening. And I had really gotten my hopes up about pie. And this week, a piece of pie fell right into my lap, figuratively speaking. Literally speaking, that would have been a mess.

I made fall cookies with my sister. I considered bringing some into work but didn't. And that was okay because there were cookies at work this week. I can always make my fall cookies for this next week.

I accidentally left my phone at home one day this week. So if you were trying to contact me, it was no different than normal. Always expect replies within 3-5 business days.

I am spider-bite free for the last couple of months. I wish all my spiders the best of luck out there in the woods where they can bite anything and anyone else!

Fantasy Football is going pretty good. I pulled out a win in my office league by .09 points. That's hardly anything. I am now 4-1. In my family fantasy football league, my success rate is abysmal. I am 1-4 and somehow every player on my team sucks. But it's okay to judge me by my weakest Fantasy Football team.

In other sports news, Randy Johnson is a photographer for the NFL. He also does travel, concert, and wildlife photography and he's pretty good! I like that guy. Turns out he studied photojournalism in college. Just goes to show, if you're tall, you can do anything.

May you always be tall and achieve all your dreams.

Rachel

Cause and Effect?
Here's the thing. If you spill a can of paint on yourself, you're going to have to clean it up. That's because there are consequences to our actions. So if you do something bad, you best not be surprised if you have to make up for it in some way. Interesting how that plays out and does not make you really think at all but it seems to me enough people are not thinking about this!

REVIEWS

Ralph Lauren Bedsheets
I have been using Ralph Lauren bedsheets that once belonged to my sister. Just last week I said to myself, "This is what you get with Ralph Lauren: quality." And even though what I'm about to tell you may seem to contradict that statement, I would argue it doesn't. Between the moment I said that to myself and this week, I have put a hole in the fitted sheet with the heel of my right foot. Now there is a rip in the middle of my sheets. But here is what you also need to know, these sheets are from 2008 or 2009. They have put in more than their expected time of service. Moreover, I might have really sharp heel skin. We'll never know. But if you know of good, ethically made sheets, let me know. 8/10
Hydroflask
I've been using a Hydroflask water bottle for the last eight years or so; I'm ready to tell you what I think. They are good water bottles. They really do keep the cold in and the hot out. Or vice versa (but I have never put anything hot in mine because I dislike most of the hot drinks). I have a couple of dents in my Hydroflask but that has actually provided me with a place to rest my thumb while I'm drinking. I would say there are almost no downsides to owning one except owning one in 2022 is kind of not cool anymore. And that's not on Hydroflask, it's just that waterbottle trends change so fast. If it's a reusable water bottle, I'm going to reuse it until it can be reused no more. 9/10
Google Sheets
This is a sheet-heavy review section. I use Google Sheets sometimes at work and it seems like a necessary evil. Google Sheets is great for sharing and has a better standard color palette than Excel (I love you Excel!). Google Sheets is not great for the overall spreadsheet experience. What drives me absolutely bonkers above all other things is that if you want to increase or decrease the amount of decimals in your cell, you have to use counterintuitive buttons to do so. They are backwards from the Excel buttons and Google knows it. If feels cruel to switch a thing like that, but it certainly didn't stop them. 3/10
