Elder Justice: A Road Map to Developing Elder Abuse Policy, Protocol, and Procedures

Oct. 26, 2pm-4pm (virtual): Zoom

This FREE virtual training, intended for law enforcement officers in supervisory positions, offers suggestions for creating policy, protocol, and procedures to address elder mistreatment. This course will serve as an introduction to and an overview of Virginia Center on Aging (VCoA)'s newest digital tool kit that can be used in conjunction with providing training on your new or revised policy.

VCoA's Abuse in Later Life Project has launched a fall training series about elder abuse. These trainings are free of charge.

Under Investigation: Considering the Intricacies of Elder Abuse Cases
November 3, 9-11 am (Virtual: Zoom)

This virtual course will analyze a case of elder mistreatment with expert trainer Beth Bonniwell, Domestic Violence Coordinator with Henrico County Police Division. In doing so, participants will learn to identify best practices for evidence collection, understand the importance of a muti-disciplinary approach to investigations, and learn of community resources. (PIC pending.)

Rising Cost: Financial Exploitation and Elder Abuse
November 17, 9:30–11:30 am (Virtual: Zoom)

According to the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the American Association of Retired Persons, older adults lost nearly $3 billion dollars due to cybercrime in 2021. This represents a 62% increase from 2020. While each age group saw an uptick in rates of fraud, those over 60 accounted for nearly a quarter of the all the financial losses. Join Commonwealth's Attorney Alison Martin as she tells us how she works to bring justice to these victims. (PIC available.)

Long Term Care Facilities: What to expect when investigating Adult Abuse, Neglect, Exploitation
December 7, 10 am – 12 noon (Virtual: Zoom); OR,
December 9, 10 am – 12 noon (Virtual: Zoom)

The coronavirus pandemic placed a spotlight on long term care facilities, especially nursing homes. While the focus was on controlling spread of disease, we saw a shadow pandemic unfold: elder abuse cases began to skyrocket. A Yale University study found an 83.6% increase from pre-pandemic estimates in reports of mistreated older adults during April and May 2020. Join nationally recognized speaker Carey Raleigh as she talks about best practices for responding to elder mistreatment in long term care settings. (PIC pending.)
