Sharing it & Adulting, Writing Prompt, & More
Have you ever meant to share something you created...but found yourself putting it off? Tinkering with the piece, then delaying the reveal date...again?

Or have you ever been so impatient to get the sharing part over with that you just threw your creation out there—a little soon? So it was SUPER rough around the edges when it reached its audience? And this wasn't a workshop kinda scenario?

I've done both. How about you?

The thing is, sometimes we've done enough work on the thing—including workshopping it—and it's time to share it with the world.

This requires courage.

Then there's the To Heck With It I Can Improvise And Not Really Prepare mentality. In my case, this happens when I'm resisting creating the thing at all.

Have you ever done this? Thrown yourself into making-and-sharing something without prep because that was the only way you'd do it?

That takes its own kind of courage: the moxie to do it at all and the backbone to live with the outcome.

Bravery is always required when we share our stories, whether we've spent years crafting them or are spontaneously gabbing at an open mic we never expected to attend.

I think that very bravery helps us to grow up in ways we may not have before. Because we have to "step up" to be vulnerable and willing to accept—and learn from—the audience's response.

It takes emotional maturity. It's also generous on the part of the storyteller and the audience.

Honestly, what would we do without each other's stories to remind us that we are not alone?

What's more mature than connecting, empathizing, and recognizing our shared humanity? Not only in a beautifully crafted story but in the witnessing of someone's imperfect, brave attempt to tell it or to create anything?

Here's a prompt that's related to this sort of thing—that also shows what happens when I make-and-share something without preparing first. 🤪
  • Adulting (the deeply imperfect livestreamed version of the prompt, which I was sure would lead to mockery & humiliation, thus compelling me to delete it...and then it got more views in less time than many of my videos do...and people were kind!)
  • Adulting (the edited version that has some dignity—well, more than the other one)
Here it is in writing—5-minute time limit:
  • Write about an instance when you realized you were "adulting"—doing something responsible or brave that required grownup maturity. Where and how old were you, what was happening, what were you doing, and how did it go? How did you feel about it?
Here's a playlist of prompts like the one above. I'm live-streaming new ones on Thursdays on YouTube and social media.

May the prompts inspire you to write about your life with candor and insight.

My last workshops of the year are coming up, so scroll down for that.

If you've been unwell, I hope you're feeling better every day.

If you're in mourning, I send my deepest condolences.

I'm so glad you're here.
