Dear <<First Name>>,

On October 23 at 7:00 p.m. there will be a special screening of the filmed play, A Poem and a Mistake, which is based on a new translation of Ovid’s Metamorphoses. The filmed play will be followed by an interactive discussion with the playwright/filmmaker, the performer, and the translator.

Deirdre d’Albertis, Dean and Vice President of Bard College, has reached out to LLI members to tell us about the screening.

Here is the announcement from the Starr Cinema (previously Upstate Films):

STARR · RHINEBECK
Sunday, October 23 at 7:00 p.m.
Fresh from its hit run at the Australian Centre for Contemporary Art, Cheri Magid’s film/play follows the story of Myrrha, a grad student in the classics grappling with the 50 sexual assaults in Ovid’s Metamorphoses, a text beloved by her professor. When he refers to the poem as “being about love,” Myrrha pushes him, and suddenly, like the characters in Metamorphoses, the professor is transformed into a young woman who looks exactly like Myrrha. A Poem and a Mistake is a magical and terrifying confrontation with gender, sexuality, power, and desire.

Co-presented by Bard College and followed by a talkback with playwright Cheri Magid, co-creator and performer Sarah Baskin, and Stephanie McCarter, the first contemporary female translator of Metamorphoses into verse (Penguin 2022).

In a note to Vice President D’Albertis, Cheri Magid explained:

I wrote A Poem because as a professor at NYU I was wrestling with how to read and teach great texts that also contain sexual assault.  At the time I was also working with Stephanie McCarter, the first contemporary female translator of Metamorphoses into verse, on another project, and became obsessed with her work. Stephanie has pointed out that many of the rapes in Metamorphoses have historically been translated out and made consensual and, in her translation, she puts them back in.

When Sarah and I started working on the play, we wanted to find a way to creatively explore the dark subject matter while also making something engaging and entertaining.
