Garden Bloggers’ Bloom Day – October 2022

Oct 15, 2022 08:22 am

Welcome to Garden Bloggers’ Bloom Day for October 2022.

Here in my USDA Hardiness Zone 6a garden, we’ve had two light touches of frost last weekend, and the forecast for the next ten days, last I looked, promised a couple of mornings with temperatures dipping below freezing.

And it is suddenly quite dry.

But there are still blooms!

First up are the tall sedums which on hindsight isn’t the best way to start a blog post about what’s blooming because those blooms are done. They are browner than that picture shows, taken in early morning light. They’ll stay standing all winter to remind us of what once was.

But there are real, actual blooms too.

Let’s walk around and have a look, shall we?

These nicotiana flowers came up on their own and then I moved them where I wanted them. They’ll provide non-stop blooms until a hard freeze
Nearby these marigolds planted at one end of the vegetable are holding up well. Yes, it takes a bit of time for them to start flowering from seed but once they start to flower, they bloom and bloom and will be one of the last flowers standing
Oh, you noticed the zinnias in the background of the marigold picture? Yes, they too are a “must grow every year” annual, at least for me. Still blooming in mid-October.
That nasturtium! Once it cooled down, these plants went from little one-foot mounds to sprawling mounds extending three feet in all directions. But see where the frost nipped them? So sad.
On a happier note, the snapdragons and alyssum I planted in late March are still blooming. Yes, they briefly paused when it got hot, but now look at them!
Now, here’s a true October bloom. These are autumn crocuses though I’m not sure which variety. I planted a bunch more of these in the front garden. They should be up any day now!
You can’t have a fall garden without asters.
Oh, look at that! A tiny bloom on Viola odorata “Rosina’ which I planted out this spring. It should overwinter, and though hard to find “in the trade” as they say, it’s supposed to be a good self-sower. That would be nice!
And let’s wrap this up because I’m late enough as it is. I planted some pansies in the front. I hope you planted some in your garden for fall!

And that’s it!

What’s blooming in your garden on Garden Bloggers’ Bloom Day. Show us! Post on your blog about the blooms in your garden, then come back here and leave a link and a comment.

And remember…
