‘Design Your Moves’
Dance and technology will provide an authentic and motivating environment for students to experiment and create through movement and Design.
Big ideas for Dance, Technology and Design
- Dance is performed to express emotion, tell stories and simply for fun.
- Dance brings people together and provides a sense of community.
- People design and make products or events that solve problems or meet a need
- People can give and use feedback using elements of Design - what they like and suggestions for changes
'Design Your Moves' focus will be on each class knowing the elements of dance- body, action, space, time, and form - through various hands-on experiences and movement activities around dance. The students will be involved in planning the dance choreography, props and costumes needed to make their dance come to life. Students will know to use the skills from last term's Music, Drama and Dance passion projects to express themselves through movement and music.
The Te Huka teachers have each chosen a theme for their dance. Room 5 has a martial arts-inspired dance supported by the colour black; Room 13 has a dance inspired by the colour yellow, and Room 14 has a positive theme using multi colours.
'Design your Moves' is a concept where students will identify a movement need in the local environment, i.e. dance, game, activity, or object. They will use the design process to create something to meet this need.
Te Reo Māori - teaching dance elements or kinds of movement using Te Reo Maori and simple design terms.
Mathematics - use Measurement, where students will create and use appropriate non-standard units to measure length, area, volume, capacity, weight, turn, temperature and time. Students will understand that when comparing the unit of measure, it must be the same, and you cannot leave gaps or overlap when measuring length and area.
During our inquiry 'Design your moves, ' students will investigate how the measurement concepts of speed, turn, time/duration, and length are essential considerations when designing a dance, game, activity or object. Our other Strand focus is Pattern and Algebra. Students will continue to create and describe a simple number, spatial and two variable patterns. Students will use simple sequencing vocabulary. They will also be learning to explain the rule for these patterns correctly. They will learn to identify how movement patterns are used when creating a dance.
English - to explain the dance elements and how they are used to create impact. It also involves explaining how different music makes us feel and how dance tells a story.
Digital Technologies - use digital tools to record, evaluate and share our dances and designs with others.
