The latest addition to the Praise and Worship team, Felicia Hammonds brings her soulful alto and luminous smile to share songs from on high every Sunday. However, that is not the only time she lets God shine through her willing servanthood within the Family Life ministry. Whether she is packing boxes for the food pantry, clipping flowers for the vases, or cleaning the bathrooms, she is quick to deliver a hug and that full-wattage smile to brighten anyone’s day. Not only is Felicia an undeniable servant for the Lord, she is a servant on her job as well. Daily, she is helping students to develop their skills and build dreams that go far beyond their current circumstances, such as one student being accepted into Harvard! Furthermore, she has recently been promoted and will undoubtedly allow her dedication to God and the cause of her students to continue to lead her to higher heights. We are in awe of what God is doing in her life and look forward to many more blessings for our October member of the month!
DOJ investigating allegations that Kansas City
police racially discriminated against Black officers
The US Department of Justice is investigating whether the Kansas City Police Department in Missouri engaged in a pattern of racial discrimination against Black officers, according to a letter sent to the agency Monday.
"Our investigation is based on information suggesting that KCPD may be engaged in certain employment practices that discriminate against Black officers and applicants," the letter provided to CNN by the police department reads.
Investigators will be looking into allegations involving race-based disparities in hiring, promotions, detective assignments, disciplining officers and "maintaining a hostile work environment," the DOJ said in the letter.

UNO Addition Drills
Family Life Academy of Excellence (FLAOE) is committed to finding ways to creatively strengthening foundational reading and arithmetic skills.
Some students have difficulties solving multiple step math problems, therefore the principal and math extraordinaire, Min. Shakiera Brooks decided to go back to the basics of mental math to assist the students gain speed and accuracy while solving problems and equations.
Using Uno Cards, Min. Brooks began with adding the number 9 to any number. She showed them how to move one card over to the nine spot making it ten and then quickly adding the remaining numbers. Nine plus six becomes ten plus five and a swift answer of 15 becomes the solution.
By the end of the lesson the students could add any number to 9 within a second of the problem being asked. This small fix in mental math will help with multi-step multiplication and even beginning algebra! The FLAOE students are excited to learn and implement every shortcut and math trick they can to improve their arithmetic skills.
See what else our kids are up to!
How the Fall Affected Evangelism
David wrote, “The heavens declare the glory of God and the expanse proclaims the work of his hands” (Psalm 19:1).
Jesus responded to the Pharisees, when they told him, “Teacher rebuke your disciples,” by saying, “I tell you, if they were to keep silent, the stones would cry out” (Luke 19:10).
We learn something extremely important about creation in these two verses. We learn that creation, by its very nature, is an evangelist. The heavens “declare,” the expanse “proclaims,” and the rocks “cry out” in an act of praise to its Creator.
If creation is, by its nature, an evangelist, then it would only stand to reason that human beings — by their very nature — should be considered evangelists as well.
As the world continues to emerge from the COVID 19 lockdown, the impact of the pandemic is being experienced in a number of ways. According to a recent survey, 3 out of every 5 Americans report being more tired than ever before due to the lockdown. For the believer, single or otherwise, the effects of physical as well as spiritual fatigue must be resolved effectively to ensure protection from our and God's enemy. The timely topic of single fatigue was the subject of one of this month's SAS sessions held on Mondays via Zoom.
The evening began with an engaging activity concerning the ranking of popular 90s movies. Deas. Trunaé Green pointed out that our relationship with Christ has never been about our outward appearance. She encouraged the attendants to not succumb to single fatigue by knowing our purpose, knowing who we are, and remembering what God has done for us. Dea-Elect Thomas Green ended the evening by explaining when the fear of being alone drives a decision, it can lead one to exercise poor judgment and choose a relationship that does not last. With that point, the evening concluded.

As we still bask in the new year, this is a great time to designate your "reading spot"! Now I know you are probably wondering, 'what is a reading spot'? Simply put, it's a place you have created to get cozy behind a book. It is the spot you have created just for reading. This month I am sharing 4 Tips on creating the perfect reading spot!
1. Your reading spot should be in a quiet place. This may be a place in your home, such as a corner in a room, the closet, or even the garage. It can also be a place outdoors. Find what works for you!
2. Once you have chosen the space, make it cozy. You want your area to feel warm and inviting. Adding a few throw pillows, a throw blanket, and a nice rug can help create that comfortable space. You can even add a comfortable chair or bean bag. Choose what works best for you.
3. Next, put your favorite books and current reads in that space. It will help remind you that it is your reading spot, and you'll always know where to find your recent books.
4. Lastly, grab your favorite drink, head to your reading spot, and start reading!
Do you have a reading spot? And if not, did you find these tips helpful? Let me know! Please email me at trunaegreen@gmail.com. As always, Happy Reading!
Couples Are Partners decided to switch up the Date Night routine by bringing the session to the home base at Family Life M. B. Church. The couples met up for a delicious catered meal from Olive Garden that included lasagna, calamari, and tender chicken parmigiana. Still, soup salad and breadsticks did not compare to the fulfilling lesson on commitment given by our facilitators, Bishops Alfred T. & Rosemary Lands.
The couples also performed an exercise with their spouses that answered the question, “What did your spouse do today that truly blessed you?” Patrick and Nae Burke, or “Burke 3” as we affectionately call them since they are CAP’s third set of Burkes to wed in holy matrimony, are our youngest couple. They are also parents of two beautiful boys. Patrick encouraged his wife by telling her that she blessed him when she prepared the children’s clothes and baby bag before she left for work so that his morning would be seamless. What a selfless gesture from Nae!
Couples Are Partners Date Night is wrapping up for 2022, but follow us on social media @couplesarepartners for updates on what we are doing next!
You DON'T want to miss this! You're in for a treat!

How Queen Elizabeth II's Controversial Trip to Ghana Changed the Future of the Commonwealth - Biography
In 1961, Queen Elizabeth II planned to go to Ghana, a former British colony that had gained its independence in 1957. But before she left on the trip, which was to take place on November 9 to 20, members of Parliament and the public didn't want her to go due to rising tensions in a country where President Kwame Nkrumah was well on his way to becoming a dictator. They were wary of the visit becoming too dangerous. On October 19, Winston Churchill expressed these sentiments when he wrote to Prime Minister Harold Macmillan, saying in part: "I have the impression that there is widespread uneasiness both over the physical safety of the queen and, perhaps more, because her visit would seem to endorse a regime which has imprisoned hundreds of Opposition members without trial and which is thoroughly authoritarian in tendency."
To aid growing tensions, five days before Elizabeth's trip was to begin, bombs went off in the capital city of Accra. A statue of Nkrumah was hit, which showed the president was a target. Concerns about the queen possibly becoming collateral damage while with him were heightened.
