RAVENOUS RESTAURANT REVIEWS

EAT AND DRINK YOUR WAY THROUGH THE NORTHWOODS...

We are continuing a new tradition at POV - highlighting a local restaurant so that when you visit us you know where to find the best grub and beverages!

NEXT UP | Bear Trap Inn

The Bear Trap Inn is a quaint supper club located in Land O Lakes - and is known for fine steaks and seafood. We LOVE LOVE LOVE this place, and hope you will make sure to visit on your next trip to POV! The place definitely wins out on their super Northwoods vibe and atmosphere, including a horseshoe bar. This place isn't large - it's small intimacy makes for a super cool dining experience. Best wine list in the area - bar none (pun intended). Make reservations! We also can't say enough good things about their wait staff. Oh, also they have one of the area's best outdoor dining patios and fish ponds.

The Menu | Bear Trap Inn is famous for their garlic stuffed tenderloin (GST), pan seared walleye, and the Bear Trapeze. These guys KNOW their meats and seafood. Excellent appetizers and desserts too. Ugh I shouldn't write this newsletter hungry - I can't wait to go back!!!

Background | The Bear Trap Inn was established in 1937 by John Bloomquist and Wm Freytag as Messabe Loge. Various owners gave much care and love to the place - and in 2014, Tom Baertschy became the proud owner of the Bear Trap Inn. Originally from Land O' Lakes, they now again live in town year-round. However, the Baertschy's continue to gain experience by traveling around the world discovering new recipes to use at the Bear Trap Inn - look out for menu items inspired by recent travels.

Hailing from a family of restauranteurs, Tom has used his years of experience to put his personal touches on this fine establishment. He (and his wife Madison as seen above) believe in honoring past traditions; such as displaying nearly 100 pumpkins during Halloween (these are seriously SO cool right now!), filling the pond with trout, and showcasing flowers from local businesses. Over the years The Bear Trap Inn has supported local businesses and organizations to stay connected to the community. Tom has introduced new events to the Northwoods such as Farm-To-Tables, the Cast Iron Classic, and private parties.

WINTERIZING YOUR FISHING GEAR
Don't wait until you have a problem! Now is the perfect time to clean up your fishing gear and reorganize it before ice fishing or next year's fishing season. On the Water has 8 Great Steps for Winterizing Tackle - here is a summary below.

  1. Consolidate Soft Plastics | As you condense soft plastics, be sure to keep their integrity in terms of size, color, shape and brand. This will make it easy to find what you need while also preventing color migration within the packages.
  2. Thin The HerdToss out any bent, dull, corroded or otherwise imperfect hooks, swivels, snaps, etc., and note what sizes, styles and brands you might need to restock. Jigheads, bucktails, parachute lures and the like also need close examination.
  3. Sort Your Gear | You can sort by items used for individual species such as striped bass, blackfish and fluke, or by type of fishing such as spinning, conventional, fly, surf, etc.
  4. Service Reels Early | The basic routine for smaller spinning and conventional reels requires no more than a soapy-water wash-down, complete drying, and a touch of WD40 applied to moving parts. It’s a good idea, too, to back off the drag for the winter. If the drag sticks at all, add a touch of drag lube. Make sure the ball bearings are lubricated, too, as well as the rollers on spinning reels. If you hear any squeaking from the roller, or if the bail fails to flip, it needs lubrication.
  5. Check Your LineIf you favor braid you might only need to cut away the first few feet if it appears to be in good shape. An even better idea is to reverse the braid. If you have two of the same reel, try reeling line from one to the other, which strips one reel and fills the second with the fresh end at the same time.
  6. Check Your RodsMake sure they are aligned, aren’t chipped, bent or simply broken, and don’t need to be re-wrapped. Check also the inside rim of each guide to make sure there are no nicks or grooves. You can do this with a dry cotton swab by wiping the end of it along the inside of each guide. Burrs and chips will catch the cotton and quickly make themselves evident. Any doubt about a guide means immediate replacement.
  7. Patch and Store Waders ProperlyThat small hole in your waders might not seem like much to worry about right now, but when the cool water of spring starts seeping into your boots, you’ll wish it had been sealed. Patch it now, before the action starts. Patch kits are available from most bait and tackle stores.
  8. Lights, Pliers, Knives and the Rest | Make sure head lamps, pliers, weight scales, etc., are all cleaned and lubricated. To prevent corrosion, remove the batteries from flashlights, digital scales and the like. With pliers, less expensive choices can be completely wiped down with oil or lube. Use a high-viscosity oil that is small enough to get into the joints and lube only the moving parts. Be sure to give some love to your knives and other cutting tools as well.

CHOOSE YOUR OWN ADVENTURE
We are continuing another new tradition at POV - highlighting an activity/ adventure in the area so that when you visit us you know what you want to do! We LOVE it here - we want to introduce the area to you so that you know how special it is here too!

NORTHWOODS PHOTOGRAPHY
The resort more often than not provides the perfect lighting for THAT photo. We thought we'd share some tips and tricks to nature photography - so that you could practice with your DSLR or smartphone camera before your next trip to POV. With the new capabilities of smartphones, anyone can capture brilliant photos! Please email your favorite POV nature photos to Gen and we will share them on social media and the winner submission in our November newsletter!

Last week we also had the sincere honor to host Instagram's @loripotrykus again at the resort this last weekend. See her beautiful work here.

RAD RESORT RECIPES
BRING A BIT OF VACA TO YOUR TUMMY
The recipes we highlight are greats for your time here at the resort or while at home. Better yet - practice at home for the big reveal during your time at POV!

SALMON ON A PLANK
One of the easiest, healthiest ways to eat at the resort is salmon on a plank on the grill. I grew up with my dad having this as one of his signature dishes, and it is hard to mess up and oh so good! Pair it with microwaveable Uncle Ben's wild/long grain rice and broccoli for super easy cleanup - you can't go wrong!!!

INGREDIENTS/SUPPLIES
  • Cedar Planks - Find them at Trigs, Pick N Save, or Ace
  • Salmon Filets (we recommend easier no skin)
    • Our Fav: No Name Seasoned Salmon - found in Trig's frozen meat case.
    • For regular salmon, we find the best type of salmon to use is King Salmon - rich flavor and is high in omega-3. Wild salmon is generally considered to be the best salmon to consume. However, there are five types of Pacific salmon and two types of Atlantic salmon. Atlantic salmon is typically farmed, while Pacific salmon species are primarily wild-caught.
  • Optional Prep:
    • Olive Oil
    • Seasoning (if bought unseasoned) -- parsley, dill, basil, tarragon, thyme, oregano, chili powder, cumin, citrus pair well.
    • Instead of seasoning, consider making a Honey Garlic Glaze or a Bourbon Glaze.
BASE DIRECTIONS
  1. Soak cedar planks for at least 1 hour in warm water. Soak longer if you have time (this soak will ensure the plank does not catch fire). The easiest way is to submerge it on a baking sheet and then weigh down the plank with a filled ramekin or bowl to keep it fully submerged. Or try soaking in a combination of water and a little white wine, cider, or sake to give your plank an extra infused dash of flavor.
  2. Pat the plank dry before using for best results.
  3. Preheat an outdoor grill (gas grill is easier to maintain heat level but either will do) for medium heat. Place planks on the grill grate. Heat planks until they start to smoke and crackle just a little.
  4. Season the fish with olive oil and seasoning of choice. Lawrys or Emril's have good seasoning that is easy to find.
  5. Place the plank in the center of the hot grill and cover the grill.
  6. You do not need to flip fish on a cedar plank while it is cooking.
  7. Close grill cover. Grill salmon until it flakes easily with a fork, about 20 minutes (aim for an internal temperature of about 135˚F). Salmon will continue to cook after you remove it from the grill. (If you get the No Name Salmon at Trigs, it has a pop out tube to indicate perfect cooking time).
  8. Eat! Eat! Eat!!!
