Welcome to the Hurt Your Brain newsletter, the place to get podcasts and links that will make you think.
….

Today is the big day. As part of the ongoing newsletter riddle contest, my riddle is officially live today. Check it out down below and submit your answer to mine and all the others so far on this page. The contest is open until Nov 11th. Good luck!

But before getting to that, here are some podcasts that made me think that I think you’ll love.

PODCAST RECOMMENDATIONS
The Always Sunny Podcast: Who’s More Healthier? Part 2
  • The Big Idea: All those numbers on your lab work? What the heck do they mean?
  • Normally, I just go about my business being a fan of this podcast and not necessarily recommending it here. Mainly because this is one of those comfort listens where I can shut my brain off and just enjoy it.
  • But this episode is different, because the three hosts and their podcast producer/show writer all get routine lab work done as a competition to see who is the “healthiest.” A great doctor comes on the show to walk through what all the values actually mean (and who "wins"), and it’s all very informative and funny.
  • This part 2 is where they get right to it, but it's very worth listening to part 1 to hear how this came to be and to hear them all argue what “being healthy” even means.
  • As a show that puts a lot of effort in the visual component, here is part 1 and part 2 on YouTube.

The Daily: What Are Tactical Nuclear Weapons, and What if Russia Uses Them? [website with transcript]
  • The Big Idea: Tactical nukes are about 1/1000th the power of WW2 era atomic bombs, and have very specific battlefield purposes, including psychological warfare.
  • Tactical nukes have been showing up a lot in headlines lately, and this episode is an excellent breakdown around what they actually are and what the current landscape looks like.
  • The history of these weapons over the past 30 years is largely independent of any discussions or policies around dismantling the mega-destructive modern H-bombs around the world, which is surprising.

Stuff You Should Know: Vinyl Records — Black Magic at Work
  • The Big Idea: When you play a vinyl record, you are hearing the actual and physical language of sound that was etched into the grooves of the record.
  • It was only two weeks ago that I was putting on a record and thinking how magical it all was, even in the face of modern technology. And then this episode comes out with perfect timing. Solid Stuff You Should Know episode.
  • My personal love of records are threefold: 1) They really do sound great 2) Our collection was passed on to us by family and it’s a great way to feel close to them 3) It forces me to listen to a whole album, which I typically don’t do. And as a bonus reason, it’s sad how freeing and wonderful it is to not have a tech algorithm creeping on my music choices.

The Ezra Klein Show: Hard Fork — Elon’s Hidden Motives + A Meetup in the Metaverse
  • The Big Idea: The "metaverse" is still weird and has questionable utility, but it's populated by a surprising diversity of backgrounds and ages.
  • I don’t look for tech gadget news, but I like anything that helps me understand what the heck is going on in a world where I increasingly don’t understand what technology even means. I don’t want to be part of web3 or the metaverse or whatever, but I want to understand it. This show from the New York Times with two tech journalists seems like a good way to satisfy that answer. Big questions and deep dives from their own expertise and that of their colleagues.
  • Hard Fork is a new show from Kevin Roose and Casey Newton and the show has its own feed (<--website with transcript), but I enjoyed Ezra Klein’s introduction to it before playing this episode in his feed.

PODCAST RIDDLE
Turn on images to see. Alt text: Visual: Picture of desert island in middle of ocean with a shining vinyl record in place of the sun during sunset. Riddle text: Isn’t a straight-forward interview rather bland?/ Why not cast guests away into imaginary desert island sand?/ For 80 years on the BBC, guests have picked tunes to take with them./ but what they reveal between songs is what makes this a gem.
Can you guess the show? Submit answer here.
As a reminder, you can guess all these riddles now or wait until they are all out in the world. The contest ends Nov 11th. Tomorrow, Podcast Delivery is sending theirs out, and the last one, Podplane, goes out later this month.

Do it for fun, or more important, to win a Sonos Bluetooth speaker. Prizes are provided by The Squeeze from Skye Pillsbury, who has simply been killing it lately and very quickly has some of the best podcast industry reporting found anywhere.

I’ve made all the visuals, so if nothing else, please give them all a gander! They are all listed under the “submit your riddle answers” section.

I’ll include another reminder when all the riddles are out in the wild if you’d like to go through and submit them all at once.

PODCAST LINKS

Really appreciated an unexpected shout out with one of my visuals during a podcast conference.

A really cool idea: Tink Media is doing a podcast recommendation hotline. Call 1-844-POD-AT-ME (844-763-2863) to hear a different podcast recommendation each day, and you can also leave a recording of your own recommendation. Spoiler: today is the excellent Ear Hustle. See what tomorrow is!

OTHER LINKS TO MAKE YOU THINK

This Is The #1 Ritual You Need To Do Everyday. From Barking Up The Wrong Tree, a pretty insightful and fun look at rituals and why we should embrace them, even if some of them are silly.

For fun: I sadly couldn’t relate more to these 15-second recipes.

For fun 2: Incredibly rare clouds

That's all for today. See you in two weeks!
