Razer reveals the world's first 5G mobile gaming handheld, the Razer Edge

RAZER

What's happened?

During this year's RazerCon, Razer revealed the Razer Edge 5G, which had previously been teased by Qualcomm and Verizon during Mobile World Congress in Las Vegas in September.

Why does it matter?

The Razer Edge 5G is said to be the world's first dedicated 5G gaming device. This handheld will have access to thousands of games at your fingertips.

What's my take?

The Razer Edge 5G is now official, the product of a collaboration between Razer, Qualcomm and Verizon. It's going to launch in the US to take advantage of that 5G network, although it's also going to be sold as a Wi-Fi version.

It will come ready to play Android games, as well has offer access to the Epic Games Launcher and streaming services like Xbox Cloud Gaming and Nvidia GeForce Now.

It will cost $399.99 for the Wi-Fi version and joins a landscape that's getting increasingly crowded with options for gaming on the small screen. The competition will be to see who wins Christmas sales, with Logitech, Nintendo, Steam Deck and Razer now all with skin in the game.

We're pulling apart the announcement, but in the meantime, you can see how all the competition compares:

Mercedes teams up with Apple to bring Spatial Audio into cars for first time

MERCEDES-BENZ

What's happened?

Mercedes has announced partnerships with Apple Music and Universal Music Group.

Why does it matter?

The move will bring Dolby Atmos to a range of Mercedes models for more immersive music.

What's my take?

Over the past decade, auto manufacturers have moved to increase the tech in our cars to make them more consumer-friendly and to try and keep pace with the smartphone revolution.

Audio has always been an easy target for such development, with high-end audio brands finding their way into a range of models, along with, more recently, streaming services, for instant access to all your tunes.

Adding Dolby Atmos - or Spatial Audio as Apple likes to call it - gives Mercedes another consumer hook. With lots of buzz around tracks mixed for a more immersive listening experience, the addition to your car makes a lot of sense, especially if you have an electric car.

Many top Mercedes models are already pretty quiet, but with the premium Burmester sound system, the silence of an EV, and support for Atmos, you have a great system for music listening.

Sony Xperia 5 IV review: Making gains

POCKET-LINT

What's happened?

For many years, Sony has offered on of the few compact flagship phones in the guise of the Xperia 5. You get pretty much everything in the Xperia 1 flagship, but in a size that's a lot more pocketable and a mite cheaper as a result. There are notable improvements in Xperia 5 IV as Sony continues to make gains, but faced with competition like the Asus Zenfone 9, is this the year that Sony comes out as king in the small phone stakes?

Our quick verdict

The Xperia 5 IV updates Sony's compact flagship device, making this one of limited selection of devices that offer a full suite of specs in a smaller package. There's a great display and stellar battery life, in a package that's ideal for those who don't want to lug around a huge phone. But the camera retains its focus on manual usage, which isn't as quick and easy to use as many rivals, while the price is high. Read our review.
