Welcome to Colostomy UK's September Update

You Stepped Up again - thank you!

A massive thank you to everyone who took part in our Step Up For Stomas: The 39 Challenge campaign. Despite the uncertain times it was fabulous to see how many of you walked, cycled, baked, jumped, juggled, and knitted your way to raising funds for us. Rest assured that you are making a difference and your efforts will help us to continue to be there for everyone who needs us.

If you set up fundraising pages via Just Giving or Facebook all the money donated to you will be transferred directly to us. if you've been collecting pledges using a sponsorship form now's the time to call in those pledges. You can send cheques to Colostomy UK, 100 Berkshire Place, Winnersh RG41 5RD, and if you'd rather transfer the funds raised to us please just get in touch by email to getinvolved@colostomyuk.org

We'll be announcing the final amount raised by the end of the year.

Did you know? - blockages

Our information on blockages is the single most visited page on our website this year with nearly 31,000 page views already. Blockages are also known as bowel obstructions and one can lead to the output from your stoma slowing down or even stopping completely.

While most people are able to live life with a stoma as they did before their surgery, sometimes stoma problems arise which like blockages which do cause concern. Check out our information and tips on managing everything from blockages to parastomal hernias, or ballooning here

Supporting our Stoma Aware campaign

We need your support to make our high streets more Stoma Aware

Our Stoma Aware day activity highlighted the impact society not being Stoma Aware can have on many people. Lack of suitable toilet facilities, and a lack of awareness of who may need to use an accessible toilet and why, can have a devastating impact, reducing mobility and increasing feelings of loneliness and isolation.

We want our campaign to be a catalyst for change and we need your help. We've created a series of tools that you can use to present to business and organisations in your area to encourage them to make their facilities Stoma Friendly. These include an introductory letter you can print off, our Stoma Friendly toilet guidelines and a Stoma Aware poster. If you'd like us to send you hard copies email getinvolved@colostomyuk.org

If everyone who receives this newsletter convinced just one business to become Stoma Aware they'd be over 10,000 places more welcoming to people living with a stoma. Now that would be real change!

Open days and events

We've been out and about recently meeting with ostomates, and health & social care professionals.

It's been great to get back on the road. This month we've been to the Association of Stoma Care Nurses (ASCN) annual conference in Harrogate, and Best Practice at the NEC Birmingham. Best practice is the UK’s number one event for the Primary Care and General Practice Community, an important area for us to focus on. Check out our events listings on our website for details of open days and other exhibitions we'll be attending.
Get festive with Colostomy UK

We've teamed up with Charity cards online to offer a pack of ten cards and envelopes for just £4.50

If you're looking to send your loved ones a Christmas card this year why not spread a bit of stoma awareness as well as festive cheer and shop with us. All profits from sales of our Christmas card packs will help us to better support more people living with a stoma.

An important part of our work is campaigning - find out more.
