Dear Friends,

As autumn begins, I find myself looking forward to a busy and exciting period. There are two major speaking events on the immediate horizon and we're working on some new videos which I'm anticipate sharing with you in the very near future. I wish you and your family a safe and happy October.

Let's get started!

This month's Feature Video was actually the second episode of the "Day In The Life of a Neurosurgeon" video series. Nearly 60,000 people have watched this episode on YouTube, yet it's never been featured in the Newsletter. We're fixing that today.

In the video, you will learn about patient preparation, and my own pre-surgery prep. You will also get a glimpse of what Med Student Teaching Rounds looks like.

After you watch, please be sure to subscribe to my YouTube channel.

In the News

It was a privilege to be joined by Dr. Robert Conenello in speaking to Adventist Health this past October 6th. This was my second time speaking to this terrific organization.
We discussed challenges of medicine and the perspectives of patient and physician, and their relationship to each other. Thank you to the team at Adventist for your enthusiastic response.
We're committed to sharing content from the website that still has value and purpose.

It is no secret that the pandemic challenged us in many ways. In August 2020, the athletes of William & Mary's Women's Soccer team were frustrated and disappointed. 48 hours previously, the soccer team had received news that their season was cancelled until further notice. Athletes who had dedicated years to their sport would be unable to play. Seniors would lose their pinnacle year, their leadership year in the chaos of a country trying to manage the Covid crisis.

I was invited to speak to the team as a part of the Tribe Lecture series. As a coach, as an athlete, and as the author of a book about Cognitive Dominance, I saw my task as helping the team to see how the challenges they faced were an opportunity to reframe what they might be thinking and to seize that opportunity to DECIDE that the outcome WOULD be positive. Life after all, is about choices.

For them, it was a fresh way of looking at what had just happened, and particularly powerful for the athletes who may not have faced truly challenging times over the course of their young lives. I was delighted to see how well received the talk was, and to later learn of the impact it had on the group.

The video of the event is on my website. I hope you find it useful.
