AGAR's Java & Jazz Concert Series

Saxophonist Joseph Henson and his jazz quartet (Isaac Williams, piano;
Jonah Horton, bass; Daniel Kelly II “D.K.,” drums) invite you to a “release party” of Henson’s latest CD for October’s Java & Jazz concert.

Joseph Henson, formerly a member of the US Army Blues Jazz Ensemble from Washington,
D.C., retired in December 2018 to become Associate Professor of Commercial Music and Jazz
Studies at the Liberty University School of Music. He has played saxophone and written music
for the Blues for 21 years and has also been the band’s Musical Director for the past few years.
Henson holds degrees in music from the University of South Carolina and the University of North
Texas, and performs regularly in the D.C. area with a wide variety of groups, including his own
quintet. He and his wife Mary live in Forest, VA with four of their five kids.

Henson has continued to play for Amherst Java and Jazz during the pandemic. He has been composing new works also. Now he is ready to release a new CD album, and will hold a release party at Java and Jazz on October 29 at 6 pm. Please come and bring your friends.

Tickets are $12 for adults and $6 for students, which include admission
and a coffee or soda from Baine's Books and Coffee.

Spotlight on Local Art
Have you seen the art displays in our main hallway? Stop by to say hello and browse!

Amy Napior started SOAR in 2012 after she was forced into early retirement due to injury.

Once retired, I knew I needed to do something - the idea for SOAR evolved from realizing how expensive an ill pup can be.  Our standard poodle, Hummer, had Addison Disease which cost over $3000 per year. Made me think of so many that didn’t expect or have the money to deal with a critically injured animal. So I started SOAR to help Amherst County.  But how could I raise money? Farm produce helped some (SS Market vendor for 7 years ) but off-season I started crafting. I love pottery and can kinda sew so that’s where the baskets began. Your left hand is the potter’s wheel and your right feeds the machine.  Some of my favorite creations are the teapots and handle baskets. Every basket’s sale goes 100% to SOAR.  Fun for me and life-saving for the animals.  I call that a “win-win!”        - Amy Napior

Annual Giving to Second Stage
A donation to the Second Stage annual fund allows us to continue offering a gathering place to inspire creativity and community. It enables us to provide a venue for art, music, film, a farm and artisan market, and much more.

Beyond these cultural activities - not to mention Baine's coffee shop and bookstore - Second Stage also houses a reliable workspace for local artists and entrepreneurs.

why they say Second Stage is worthy of your support.
A donation to Second Stage provides space for your neighbors who are small business owners.
"[Second Stage] offers a cultural outlet for entertainment while also being home to local small businesses which provide benefits to the community. It has provided me with a sunny and peaceful studio space at an affordable rate. Our leased relationship has helped us stay in business and includes amenities which keep us comfortable. ... It offers a venue for local artists in theater, music, and the arts. Our community benefits from the cultural experience and enjoys creative expression.”     - John Kortmulder

We have other ways that you can show your support as well. If you've seen the gorgeous landscaping here at Second Stage, you may know we have Donna Meeks to thank for that. In true Donna spirit, a Music Scholarship Fund has been created to bring music to Amherst. Please consider donating in her memory.

Donna was a giver.
We marveled at the exceptionally beautiful grounds that she nurtured in our neighborhoods and on the Sweet Briar campus.
Donna’s gift.
We reveled in her ever-positive approach to life.
Donna’s gift.
We admired her love of people and their unique talents.
Donna’s gift.
We wished for her musical talents, her clear voice, her sure hand on the instrument.
Donna’s gift.
We were ever grateful that she believed in the mission of building a creative community at Second Stage.
Donna's gift.
We delighted watching her in the audience at many musical evenings.
Donna’s gift.
We appreciated her collegial approach to design, installation, and upkeep of the Osinga Memorial Gardens.
Donna’s gift.
Toward the end of her life, she didn’t waiver. She accepted the reality of her worsening condition with the grace and good spirit we had come to admire and hope to emulate.
Donna’s gift.
Thank you, Donna.
