Latin America’s left-leaning parties and politicians are showing strong signs of renewal. In Argentina’s October 2019 election, the moderate-left candidate, Alberto Fernandez, ousted the market-friendly incumbent, Mauricio Macri. In 2021, a far-left teacher won Peru’s presidential election. Most recently in 2022, Gabriel Boric, a former student protest leader and leftist legislator, became the youngest president in Chile’s history while Gustavo Petro became the first leftist president in Colombia’s modern history. Meanwhile in Brazil, the Presidential race will go to a second-round runoff set for October 30, with leftist former President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva holding a slight lead.
