Kia ora Kāpiti

Our final election results have been declared, and newly elected members will be settling into their governance roles over the coming weeks – check out our stories for more.

Our Council staff have been busy too, so we've plenty to tell you about our work to provide career pathways for our Aquatics team, our Workforce Plan, and improving road safety. And as summer draws nearer, our splash pads are opening this weekend! You can also read about our facilities' hours for Labour Day next Monday.

Mā te wā – have a great week.

Your newly elected Council gets to work

Your newly elected Council will begin their induction this week.
The induction programme aims to equip newly elected and re-elected members with all the necessary information, resources, and support they need to be effective in their new governance roles. Induction also allows elected members to establish good working relationships with each other, and with our iwi partners, our Chief Executive, Council leaders, and other stakeholders.

We’ll be keeping you updated on what your elected representatives are up to each week, but in the meantime you can take your own crash course in Council. You might be surprised how much our work impacts your daily life.

Economic Development team recognised

Our Economic Development team’s mahi (work) has been recognised with a Best Practice Commendation for the inclusive development of the Kāpiti Coast Workforce Plan at the recent Economic Development NZ Awards.
The Workforce Plan has been a true collaboration of Council, the Economic Development Kotahitanga Board, our iwi partners, businesses and the community who have worked together to help residents find meaningful employment and assist businesses to recruit the workers they need to be successful.

Well done to all involved. Your commitment to developing, attracting, and retaining a skilled and competitive workforce will benefit everyone on the Kāpiti Coast.

Making transport safer is a team effort

Improving road safety is a team effort – Government, councils and road users all have a part to play in making some of our busiest shared spaces safe for all.
As the owners and managers of over 400 kilometres of roads and 500 kilometres of pathways, we’re committed to delivering the safest network we can.

It's not a simple job, and there’s no silver bullet for reducing harm. Our mahi (work) includes road safety education to engineering solutions, to lifting the skills of cyclists. It's about people and places.

Aquatics stars upskilling for career and customers

We’re super proud of our Kāpiti Coast Aquatics team, who’ve been studying for qualifications in lifeguarding and swim teaching.
Their mahi (work) is not only helping our team gain valuable skills and qualifications, but is also awesome for our pool customers. Anyone visiting our aquatic centres can be confident they’re in great hands. That’s what you call a win/win!

Ka mau te wehi (awesome work) to all our staff who’ve embarked on the challenging journey of combining work and study – it’s not easy but it is rewarding.

Council facilities hours for Labour Day

This weekend is Labour Weekend, so we hope you're all ready to get those tomato plants into the garden! Labour Day commemorates Aotearoa New Zealand being among the first countries in the world to guarantee workers the right to an eight-hour work day, in 1840.

  • our Council service centres will be closed, but our afterhours call centre will be taking calls on 0800 486 486 if you require urgent assistance
  • our libraries will be closed
  • Coastlands Aquatics Centre will be open Monday 8am–8pm
  • Ōtaki Pool will be open Monday 8am–6pm
  • transfer stations will be open Monday 9am–5pm

Planning for new oportunities in Ōtaki

The opening of the Peka Peka to Ōtaki Expressway is only a few months away, so it’s an important time to think about what changing traffic volumes might mean for our local economy.
Ōtaki will still be accessible from the expressway at both ends. Along with improvements to the current road and retail strip area, this provides exciting opportunities to create an attractive destination for shoppers, businesses and visitors.

That’s why we’re supporting a new Retail and Investment Strategy for Ōtaki. Both businesses and consumers are encouraged to give their thoughts on what they’d like to see for the area, and ways we can attract people to Ōtaki. Help inform the town's future direction by completing Elevate Ōtaki's survey.

Splash pads opening this weekend!

The temperatures are creeping up, we appear to have moved on from the wettest winter in many years, and the promise of a glorious Kāpiti summer is lifting spirits across the rohe (district). So it's a great time to get our splash pads up and running!

From this Saturday, 22 October, our splash pads at Marine Gardens in Raumati and Haruātai Park in Ōtaki will be switched on for spring and summer.

So if you've got antsy kids, why not head out and let them enjoy some water play? It's fun, free and both are in beautiful parks so you can relax and enjoy while watching them play.
