From the Farmer

Last week we made not one, not two, but three big pushes.  Push number one was firewood deliveries.  We made several horse-drawn deliveries of cordwood to our customers around Conway.  First we loaded up the split and cured firewood that we had harvested from our forest last winter, then we drove the horses to our customer's home, then we pressed a switch and the wood was miraculously dumped out the back of our hydraulic-lift dump wagon.  Voila!  We'll repeated the process about a dozen times and everyone will stay warm all winter.  It's always fun to be out on the road and see our neighbors around town.

Push number two was to get nearly all of our remaining vegetable land seeded to cover crops.  This involved most of the crew along with four horses, one seeder, and two cultivators, plus a grain drill.  Within 48 hours we had nearly three inches of rain and our seeds were already sprouting the very next day!

Push number three was the big dig.  1400 lbs of carrots in four hours.  Need I mention that we have a crew with super-powers?

In Other Farm News...

Next week, on Tuesday the 25th and Friday the 29th, as a thank you to our incredibly supportive community, we will be offering horse-drawn wagon rides and hot cider to our CSA members.

If you're not a member, but would like to be a part of the farm festivities, please join us for our Thanksgiving Market - see below!

We cordially invite you to wear your Halloween costumes to CSA pickup on Friday the 29th, or on Tuesday, November 1st.  Why not?

In other vegetable news, we've been singing the praises of the many crops that did fantastically well this year and for them, again, hooray!  What we haven't been as vocal about are the crops that have been less than stellar this year.  The leeks, as well as the fall broccoli and cauliflower, were ok, but a little disappointing.  All of these crops succumbed to disease problems this fall and are therefore basically done for the season, sorry to say.  Cabbages are ok, but also not fantastic.  We should have cabbage from now through the end of the season, with apologies for the cabbage gap earlier this fall.  Thankfully, there seems to be a great abundance of other crops to fill in the gaps.

Thanksgiving Market

Sunday, October 20th from noon to 4pm
(rain or shine)

We will have a full selection of our own produce for your Thanksgiving feast including squash, potatoes, carrots, beets, garlic, greens, and lots more.  We'll have other locally grown essentials like Chestnuts from Sunderland, cranberries, and more.

There will be local artisans and craftspeople selling their work,  live music, hot cider and donuts, and we'll be offering horse-drawn wagon rides throughout the afternoon. We hope this event continues to be a warm and welcoming event that brings our community together and shares the wealth of talents our membership is filled with.

We still have space for more craftspeople, makers, healers, and artists to become vendors at our event!
Please email us if you're interested.

Mark your calendars! This is a lovely event, not to be missed, and is a great opportunity to fill your Thanksgiving table with delicious, sustainable, and local food you can feel great about sharing with your loved ones.

Our apprentice Caralyn, along with her sidekick Leora have been decorating pumpkins like its Autumn.  There will be all sorts of decorative fare for your table or doorstep.
