WELCOME!
As the new school year begins, Communities In Schools KC Metro is welcoming students back to the classroom in a big way! CIS has hosted a variety of student and family-centered supports and activities to engage scholars and foster family engagement. These exciting events included: an ice cream social at Frontier Middle School of Innovation where school uniforms were available to students in need; free physicals for student-athletes at Central Middle School; a basic needs closet at Crossroads Preparatory Academy for students and family access; a self-care event and Do Not Be Late (“Donut”) attendance incentive for being on time at Guadalupe Centers High School; and a college representation day at Southeast High School to recognize and encourage students wishing to pursue higher education.

Stay tuned for other upcoming events and activities that we have in store to support our students and families throughout the school year!
LAST YEAR, WE MADE A BIG IMPACT
CIS of Mid-America served students and families in a variety of ways over the past year.
CIS of Mid-America has a proven track record of improving student outcomes in academic achievement and behavior patterns. Students participating in CIS of Mid-America projects have increased promotion and graduation rates, improved attendance, improved academic performance, and have fewer discipline referrals.

Our data shows that KC Metro students receiving individual case-managed services achieved the following results:
STUDENT SUCCESS
Student Support Coordinator (SSC) Katie McClave from Guadalupe Centers High Schools knows the importance of forming connections within the community. When SSC Katie found out one of her students, *Izabelle, had no furniture in her apartment, she took action right away! Izabelle was living independently and working full-time in addition to attending high school. She was forced to sleep on the cement floor in her apartment, hindering her ability to perform well in school. To help, SSC Katie reached out to Sleepyheads, a nonprofit organization that donates gently-used beds and bedding to Kansas City area children and families, for help. The organization supplied the student with a mattress, box springs, and bedding. CIS also formed a partnership with Flourish Furnishings, an organization in Kansas City that assists with providing whole home furnishings. SSC Katie took Izabelle shopping at their warehouse to help her pick out a couch, table, dresser, chairs, and all the furniture she could want for her apartment. SSC Katie drove the 10-foot Uhaul to Izabelle's apartment and, with her boyfriend, moved her furniture into her apartment. Izabelle now has a safe, comfortable living space and can fully focus on completing school and getting her diploma.
