Busy days at Shelter Tas!
As we approach the Shelter Tas AGM on 25th November 2022, the Shelter team has been busy finalising our Annual Report, which provides a great overview of our members’ achievements as well as Shelter Tas work over the past year. In the last week, we have completed our submissions to the Discussion Paper for the twenty-year Tasmanian Housing Strategy, and the draft Tasmanian Planning Policies, and you can find them on our website.

We recently held Trauma Informed Toolkit training in both Hobart and Devonport, delivered by our wonderful trainer, Carly Cameron. These face-to-face sessions were the result of Carly's highly successful trauma training held earlier in the year, and were specifically tailored for, and focused on self-care for Tasmanian housing and homelessness sector practitioners.
Our Workforce Development Program is more important than ever, due to intensified pressures on workers as a result of increased demand for services and housing shortage. With all attendees evaluating the session as good-excellent, we are planning to run more training with Carly in early 2023. As well as our AGM on 25th November, we are looking forward to the 2022 release of the Rental Affordability Index on November 28, 2022. Each year, the RAI report, produced by National Shelter and SGS Economics and Planning, provides an easy-to-understand indicator of rental affordability relative to household incomes, giving Australia-wide results for capital cities and ‘Rest of State’ areas.
Since 2018, both Hobart and the 'Rest of State' have been the least affordable in the country on the measure of rent to income. Please see below for more information about how private renters can get involved to tell their stories of struggle in Tasmania’s rental market.
Shelter Tas has also added our support to the Alliance for a Tasmanian Human Rights Act. As we often state, every Tasmanian has a right to a safe, secure, affordable and appropriate home that meets their needs.

National Shelter Seeking Stories from Private Renters for RAI
|
|
|
Every year, National Shelter and SGS Economics and Planning release the Rental Affordability Index, generating significant media interest and highlighting housing unaffordability.
A key element includes people speaking to the media about their experience in the rental market. If you are a renter who has recently experienced significant rent increases or are struggling to find rental accommodation, and you are interested in sharing your experience - please contact National Shelter's CEO Emma Greenhalgh at emma.greenhalgh@shelter.org.au. Your availability is required between 27 - 29 November, and your identity will remain confidential.

Housing Dashboard Update - September 2022
|
|
|
The September 2022 Housing Dashboard is currently available at the Communities Tas website.
There are 4,504 households waiting for social housing - an increase of 49 from 4,455 in August.
The time for priority applicants to be housed has increased to 76.5 weeks (monthly figure as of September 2022) from 73.6 in August, and the rolling 12 month average waiting time is 71.6 weeks.

Launceston Women’s Shelter is seeking suitably qualified women for the position of Family Support Worker. This is a permanent position, with hours to be negotiated.
Applicants will need a relevant degree or diploma (as outlined in the selection criteria), a current driver's license, police check, WWVP check, and first aid certificates.

EOI Sought for Community Housing Growth Program - Round 2
|
|
|
Expressions of Interest (EoI) for round two of the Community Housing Growth Program (CHGP) will be released on 12 November 2022.
Under the CHGP – Round 2, experienced community housing, not-for-profit and local government organisations are invited to partner with Homes Tasmania for the construction and tenancy management of around 200 new social housing opportunities, to be completed by the end of 2025. This will be a critical step in delivering Homes Tasmania’s $1.5 billion housing package and 10 000 housing opportunities by June 2032.

Parity Magazine - Call for Contributions

Parity magazine is the Council to Homeless Persons' national publication, and they are currently seeking contributions for their December edition - Homelessness and the Law.
This edition will examine how homelessness and the law intersect, the legal needs of people without a home and how the law can and should address their needs.

Alternative Housing Models: Leveraging a partnership model to provide key-worker housing
Colony 47 are co-hosting an event with the Tas Chamber of Commerce and Industry, to speak with the business community about the Jumpstart campaign - a rental subsidy and employment support for young people. Attendees will also discuss how we can bring together capital and capability to put the keys to homes into the hands of Tasmanians who desperately need them.
At the breakfast, attendees will also hear from Peter Johnston (MD, Lighthouse Infrastructure) and Scott Langford (Group CEO of SGCH) to discuss affordable housing models delivered in other states.

National Shelter AGM + Webinar

|
|
This year, National Shelter's AGM will be preceded by a webinar on housing and taxation in Australia, with representatives from the OECD and local housing experts.
The webinar will be based on the report released by the OECD earlier this year - a comparative assessment on Housing Taxation in OECD Countries, including Australia. The report identifies a number of reform options that countries could consider to enhance the design and functioning of their housing taxes, including Australia.
Guest speakers will be Sarah Perrett and Bethany Millar-Powell from the OECD, and Professor Hal Pawson and Dr Angela Jackson.

Webinar - 'Young, in Love and in Danger'
|
|
|
Yfoundations, the NSW peak body for youth homelessness, in association with Anglicare Tasmania and the University of Tasmania, will present the webinar 'Young, in love and in danger': Teens’ experiences of domestic violence and abuse in their own intimate partner relationships and the intersections with homelessness.
This event will present findings from ‘Young, in love and in danger’, a research report that reveals disturbing insights into the prevalence and nature of domestic violence and abuse among teenagers. This research arose in response to concerns of frontline workers who were reporting that a growing number of young people were being abused by a partner when under the age of 18.

COTA's Active Ageing Strategy Consultation Outcomes Released
|
|

Earlier this year, COTA Tasmania undertook state-wide consultation activities across lutruwita/Tasmania, focusing on people’s experiences of ageing and what needs to be considered and funded to influence future policy directions.
Over 1,500 community members had their say as part of our H.E.A.R Active Ageing Consultation and this lived experience will shape the development of a new six-year Active Ageing strategy for Tasmania 2023-2029.
The Outcome and Summary Reports from this important consultation, as well as infographics are now available to read on the COTA Tas website - www.cotatas.org.au/information/consultation.

Tas Community Fund Emerging Community Leaders Program

The Tasmanian Community Fund (TCF) is seeking applications for the 2023 Emerging Community Leaders program. The program aims to develop leadership skills across the community, with particular focus on supporting emerging leaders to develop skills that will empower and enable them to help their community prosper.
Emerging Community Leaders supports up to 24 participants a year with a focus on increasing their skills in governance, finance, leadership, management, communication, and project management. The program is delivered over 10 days across four residentials, and focuses on leading self, leading others, leading community and leading for lasting impact.
