The CCIQ Pulse Survey September Quarter 2022 Report has just been released indicating solid business performance, including improvements in total sales revenue and overall business conditions.  Of Queensland businesses surveyed, 61% reported operating at levels equal to or greater pre-COVID levels, and a significant portion of businesses indicating they are confident in reaching their 12 month goals.  Plus, it appears businesses are still investing in plants and equipment with one in four businesses increasing their capital expenditure during the quarter.

Unfortunately, macroeconomic factors such as interest rate hikes, labour shortages, a lack of affordable accommodation and geopolitical issues appear to be contributing to weakened business confidence.  Plus, cost challenges, including rising wage and labour costs as businesses seek to attract and retain talent; supply chain disruptions; rising inflation and cost of goods and services, including insurance costs are contributing to weakening profitability levels.  Nearly three in four businesses indicated an increase in their operating costs during the quarter, and seven out of ten businesses indicated their labour costs increased during the September quarter, which is well above this time last year.

As a result of these compounding pressures, 53% of respondents indicated that they, or someone in their business is experiencing mental health challenges, which is quite an alarming figure.  So, if this is impacting you, there are plenty of resources you can connect to, including Small Business Wellness Coaches and Beyond Blue’s NewAccess for Small Business Owners.  You can find more support for you and your team here.
