Hello, Maxwell Park neighbors!
Fall is well under way. We've turned the clocks back (possibly for the last time); we'll vote on Election Day, if we haven't already, for several Oakland races including our next District 6 councilmember; and we celebrated Halloween. Thanks to photographer and neighbor Barbara Hartford for capturing the festive spirit around Maxwell Park and the fun on Halloween night at the Camden Street party. We have included lots of photos of the many creative costumes and festivities. Shout out to the event organizers Heather Skibbens and Ryn Beeley!
In recent news related to the former Mills College campus: "Buried in a draft plan for future housing in Oakland, submitted to City Council by Mayor Libby Schaaf’s Administration, is a map of zoning changes that would rezone the beautiful park-like 135-acre campus at what is now known as Mills College at Northeastern University to allow for private real estate development, including condominiums and retail, the Oakland Post has learned." You can read the full article here. We will be watching how this develops.

Construction at MacArthur and High
Have you wondered what the construction activity is at the vacant lot at the corner of MacArthur Blvd. at High Street? Has this project snuck under the public radar? A permit search for that location shows that planning permits were issued February 2021 and building permits were issued August 2021 for a 5-story, 100% affordable, 193 unit modular building.
The Permit says: The project involves 2,470 square feet of ground floor commercial space and 193 residential units above and merges three lots into one lot for a total of 40,859 square foot parcel. The building height is 78 feet in height, where 45 foot building height is allowed. There are eight parking spaces provided and 1,500 square feet of ground floor open space. This project is 100% affordable and is applicable under SB-35 State Affordable Housing Regulation to waive the building height, density, parking, and open space standard requirement. California laws are very favorable towards expediting 100% affordable housing projects, particularly in urban areas along transit corridors.
Below are a couple renderings of the construction, which can also be found here with more details of the project.

New Restaurant: Tacos El Último Baile
Not far from Maxwell Park in the Fruitvale Public Market is the recently-opened brick and mortar of the former taco truck Tacos El Último Baile. Located at 3340 E. 12th St., #11, the new restaurant is within a short walking distance from the Fruitvale BART station (with easy and free parking in the evenings and on weekends).
The menu features owner Dominic Prado's popular street-style tacos al carbon. On a recent Thursday evening, this newsletter editor and companion dined at the restaurant's quaint outdoor patio. We enjoyed several tacos -- both corn and handmade flour tortillas -- with carnitas, pastor, and asada. Plus chose from a fresh and varied selection of salsas, peppers, onions, and more. We cannot wait to return!
Read more about Tacos El Último Baile's history here and follow on Instagram for hours (limited to Thursday-Sunday at this time).
