Extra Credit with Professor Mark Sivak! 📝

Here I share something design or tech related from the week for those looking for just a little extra credit.

While I wait for the launch of the Artemis, I stumbled across another story from space about bioprinting. In the next few weeks, a bioprinter will be sent the International Space Station (ISS) so they print some soft knee tissue and then test it back here on earth. The company that designed the printer is Redwire and they say that printing in the microgravity of space is better for bioprinting the soft tissue structures won’t get crushed as they do here on earth. Printing organs is not a new idea and there has been some success in simpler structures like the bladder. We may be heading toward a very sci-fi future where we print new organs for donors in space and then send them back to earth for transplant.

Thoughts and feedback about the extra credit this week or want to submit one for next week? Email me at m.sivak@northeastern.edu.
