November is best known for Thanksgiving and Veterans Day. Two Christian holidays, All Saints' Day and All Souls' Day, fall within early November, and the Advent calendar begins at the end of the month to countdown until Christmas, as well. Daylight savings time ends in November.

PHEWA’s Presbyterian Health Network (PHN) offers annual resources for recognizing and celebrating those who Offer Care. More than 65 million people, 29% of the U.S. population, provide care for a chronically ill, disabled, or aged family member or friend during any given year. The Church is in a unique position to pray for and offer practical help to caregivers through a variety of means to share hope, care, and provide rest for the soul. We offer these resources, and those from previous years, to guide you in this ministry.

Dear Friends,
We've been sharing the Fact Sheet on the Synod Grant of $20,000. A team of PNNE members submitted the request because we, as a presbytery, seek to enhance congregational and church leadership vitality. The Fact Sheet describes how the funds will be used, and lists short term and long term markers of success.
The Fact Sheet has been placed on PNNE's Google workspace, and a link placed on the COM page. You can click the buttons, below, which will link you to the COM page and directly to the Fact Sheet. You can always access the Fact Sheet by going to the COM page under Committees, and scroll down the page to the link.
Joy and Peace,
Scott

Gospel reading for Friday, November 11: Luke 16:1-9
|
|

1Then Jesus said to the disciples, "There was a rich man who had a manager, and charges were brought to him that this man was squandering his property. 2So he summoned him and said to him, 'What is this that I hear about you? Give me an accounting of your management, because you cannot be my manager any longer.' 3Then the manager said to himself, 'What will I do, now that my master is taking the position away from me? I am not strong enough to dig, and I am ashamed to beg. 4I have decided what to do so that, when I am dismissed as manager, people may welcome me into their homes.' 5So, summoning his master's debtors one by one, he asked the first, 'How much do you owe my master?' 6He answered, 'A hundred jugs of olive oil.' He said to him, 'Take your bill, sit down quickly, and make it fifty.' 7Then he asked another, 'And how much do you owe?' He replied, 'A hundred containers of wheat.' He said to him, 'Take your bill and make it eighty.' 8And his master commended the dishonest manager because he had acted shrewdly; for the children of this age are more shrewd in dealing with their own generation than are the children of light. 9And I tell you, make friends for yourselves by means of dishonest wealth so that when it is gone, they may welcome you into the eternal homes.

“Of the Seven Deadly Sins, anger is possibly the most fun. To lick your wounds, to smack your lips over grievances long past, to roll over your tongue the prospect of bitter confrontations still to come, to savor to the last toothsome morsel both the pain you are given and the pain you are giving back--in many ways it is a feast fit for a king. The chief drawback is that what you are wolfing down is yourself. The skeleton at the feast is you.”

Changes in the Book Of Order
|
|
|
The Presbytery of Northern New England (PNNE) will vote on the amendments to the constitution at the PNNE stated meeting on January 12, 2023. We are giving advance notice because it is a lot of reading. If you have questions as you review them, you can contact the Stated Clerk, T. J. DeMarco at sc@pnne.org. The 225th General Assembly (2022) approved 33 proposed amendments to the Book of Order—including a replacement for the entire D-section—to be considered and voted on by the 166 presbyteries prior to July 9, 2023. For an amendment to be adopted, 84 presbyteries must vote to approve it.

Daylight Saving
Brief, busy, and disorienting season,
arriving unexpected, really, twice each year,
when digits blink alarm at you from coffee-maker,
car and VCR, until your digits are deployed
in seeking, pressing, turning tiny buttons.
A tedious day or two, at least,
of patient synchronizing - There's another we forgot! -
and when the shifting's done, whatever's gained
or lost, the actual living moments
stay the same, only the names must change
to protect the innocent.
"Spring forward -" people say,
"Fall back..." not only to remind themselves
which way to turn, but to sustain that steep illusion
of control, as if we had the power to move around,
adjust, far less to add or take away,
the merest instant of this mystery we measure ourselves by.
As for saving time; that turning rests beyond,
beneath, above all springs and falls,
whenever, blinking, we ignore, forget,
escape the calibrating clock,
and find ourselves born - blinking - into now.
J. Barrie Shepherd
